I have now watched this documentary and, as also stated in the OP Daily Mail article, one point screams out to me, which is that a senior experienced police officer was warned not to take on the case on the grounds that the investigation would be focussed absolutely and exclusively upon the abduction theory and that the parents were deemed already ruled out as potential suspects. The officer's suspicion of this is quite obvious and he clearly states that had he taken it on he would have definitely insisted upon re-examining everything and everyone from the very beginning, which would include a comparison of the original and new statements of the parents and the Tapas friends to see where they did or didn't stack up. Instead, all follow up investigations were DIRECTED and investigating officers INSTRUCTED (and thus RESTRICTED imo) as to what they may or may not investigate. This begs the obvious question : why? This still tells me that there is much they are not telling us and there is far more to this than has come out, so far.

and isn't it that textbook scenario....

wealthy pillar of society + involved in a scandal = cover it up.

Given the rapid installation of Clarence Mitchell as only one of the 'big guns' to have appeared in the immediate aftermath of her disappearance I suspect there are more reasons than Gerry McCann simply being "wealthy" or a "pillar of the community". In his investigation film, Richie Hall mentions that Interpol were on the scene within minutes and before the Portuguese Police had even arrived. Strange. https://youtu.be/_yYwFnglhtw
