We know you’re out there. We just don’t know who you are and sometimes it feels like citizen investigators are the only ones fighting the darkness. We’re not. And I understand that you can’t come forward to introduce yourselves and show us you’re on the right side. The very nature of your job requires you to remain silent. And that, coupled with our collective frustration as citizens at feeling powerless to stop the horrors, makes it easy for us to forget you’re out there every day on the same side as us. I also recognize that you’re surrounded by those who destroy innocents—even amongst your colleagues and supervisors and their supervisors in your own and other government agencies. Thank you for remaining strong and not becoming one of THEM.

I could never do your job because if I were to see even one image of a child being hurt in any way it would crush my soul. And yet, you have to peruse these images constantly. How many have you had to look at in your line of work? Thousands? Many thousands? Thank you for doing what I don’t have the strength to do.

I understand that for many people who fight to end child pornography and sex trafficking, it’s common to experience a tremendous amount of stress and depression as a result. This in turn can destroy their personal as well as professional life. I’m now coming into contact with private citizens who have been fighting these horrors for years, even decades. One of these people inspired me to adopt a new mantra: “No fatigue, no fear.”

I only hope that the light will fill the dark spaces long before I too have been fighting for decades. But even after we win, I’ll remain vigilant. Thank you, government agents who have dedicated yourselves to this spiritual war against the dark side, thank you.
