I've always though that it's a totally fucked up system to allow labeling a kid as a runaway, as an excuse to basically stop looking for them.
Many so-called runaways, probably did legitimately run away from home, but there is no way to convince me that we should treat them as capable of making good decisions. Many of these kids are 12-16 years old, which is simply NOT an appropriate age to determine if you should live at home or not.
99% of the time a kid who runs away willingly at age 16 or under, will end up far worse off than what they intended. So why should our Law Enforcement be able to use that as an excuse to stop looking?
