Maternal stress could also explain homosexuality within the greater animal kingdom, as well, since homo sapiens is hardly the only species that engages in such behavior.

If shit's hitting the fan (after a genetic legacy lasting as long as DNA has been in existence) that triggers a primitive-brain stress response, it could trigger a pregnancy where the progeny wouldn't have the desire to reproduce via usual means; this could be seen as beneficial as it would help keep overpopulation from happening, and using up more resources (think about when ancestors didn't have grocery stores and were in hunter-gatherer stage or even more primitive); it's a long term strategy for survival by keeping the population in check.
