who is buying these organs?

i bet if they couldn't, stem cell investment would fucking skyrocket.

Actually organ trafficking ties in directly to obtaining stem cells. The main places to buy stem cells are the Bahamas and Ukraine and those places do some sick stuff to get them. In the Ukraine people were caught killing newborns and harvesting their organs for stem cells. Bone marrow, in particular, is the most valuable part from which to derive stem cells.

The pelvic bones are the primary source for bone marrow harvesting.

This can be done postmortem if the cadaver is maintained at the proper temperature:

It was demonstrated that HSPC exposed to a warm or cold ischemia in intact femur did not lose their phenotype and maintained their repopulating ability for two to twelve hours depending on the temperature. Additionally, fresh bone marrow remained fully viable in cell suspension for two days or four days at 37°C or 4°C, respectively. Based on these findings, cadaveric bone marrow could be considered as an alternative source of hematopoietic stem cells for transplantation.

i haven't kept up since the demise of slashdot but last i recall stem cell research in the US fell behind other countries because of restrictions, mostly faith based.
