If you want to stop gun deaths you'd go after hand guns not assault weapons which are just slightly higher than Civil War field artillery in terms of deaths.
They are exquisitely aware of how many assault weapons people have and that's why there's been the constant drum beat for the past 40 years to get them outlawed.
