Its called pandering. I don't think Trump is going to protect Epstein, in fact on the campaign trail he said Epstein "was going to run into some trouble regarding that island of his". According to deposition by brother Mark Epstein, Trump only rode on Epsteins plane for a ride back to NY. Also Trump kicked Epstein out of his resort for his shenanigans.
In fairness, he did say that. Although not recent, seems like Trump has know Epstein for quite sometime. Here's an interview from 2002 New York Magazine where he speaks on Epstein who was being featured. Way before he aspired to the presidency. Page 1. http://nymag.com/nymetro/news/people/n_7912/
