Tolkien definately steadied us for this fight did he not? His vision of what made people good or evil still resonates. The Hobbits were good because they knew that their mission would likely fail, but that was not a factor in their chosing to go on their quest. It was simply the right thing to do, and hope of reward or fear of failure were not to be considered. Fight the long defeat if need be, but do the right thing and do not look back.

YES. God dammit yes this exactly. It doesn't even matter if we lose in the end because if you can't even stand and fight for something like this you don't deserve the BEAUTY this world has to offer. The Hobbits knew that if they didn't leave, the Shire was doomed, and if they did leave there was the smallest chance at victory that anyone ever had, yet they went anyway because they knew it was right. They would not have been able to live with themselves had they not tried and we won't be able to either. Great comment.
