Franciscan Father Capristan blesses a 70-pound, 15-foot long loaf of bread while youngsters prepare to dig in. Bakers Michael d'Amico and his son, Cosmo, created the loaf for 2 hours and 40 minutes in honor of St. Anthony's Day.
Notice the date is 1959. People weren't nearly as likely to draw lewd conclusions from such imagery, or as likely to criticize the Catholic Church. At least not publicly.
Seems harmless to me. The photographer just thought it would be a good idea to ask the kids to look like they were about to tuck into it. Some seem to have taken the brief more seriously than others. If you've ever been featured in a newspaper story, you'll know that photographers have some very unexpected ideas when it comes to thinking of ways to take photos that will make people really look.

The photo itself is probably harmless but the same might not be said for Book of Arrows' intent in publishing it

Fair enough.
