ANSWER: They are people. One is dead. They died about 1 year ago. Powerful but almost never heard of.

I took the "powerful but almost never heard of" line as meaning you never hear anything on his suspicious death. When I found out about the nature of his death I was shocked that none of his politician buddies (that weren't involved in his death) were pushing for a thorough investigation.
