the reason the pewdiepie thing is being talked about so much is it has exposed how manipulative and deceitful the press are to millions of pewdiepie's fans. I've seen loads of comments from people say "well maybe Trump might actually be right about one thing then with the press" - there were a number of multi million youtube personalities come out and call this bullshit, an awful lot of people as a result got to see for themselves what the corporate media actually are.
The campaign to get pewdiepie has been a complete and utter failure and exposes just how poorly the media understand the internet. How did they ever think they could take down piewdiepie like that when their following is minute in comparison. Gamers are the new key election demographic because of the damage they can inflict online. Pissing them off is kicking a hornets nest.
With regards to this video, it does make sense why they would do it, it was an incredibly wreckless move and for what, to nail piewdiepie? No, something else is at play

He runs the most subscribed channel on Youtube. He started out just making gaming videos but transitioned over time to making sort of comedy, light-commentary stuff focusing on whatever is really popular on youtube at the moment (drama between youtubers, making spoofs of new kinds of viral videos, etc.). I never liked him back in the day but in the last year I've been watching some of his videos and he's a lot funnier and more genuine than he used to be. It's just light comedy material focused on internet culture basically.
So what is the current controversy? Is he being labelled by the left as "alt-right"? I imagine if he is this would be the reason he is being demonised.
He's made lots of jokes featuring Hitler and nazis. There's also speculation that he was a chan user back when he started his channel. The accusations from the Washington Post are most likely based on the fact that there have been several threads on chans lately speculating that he goes on /pol/, and WaPo and various other outlets have been lurking on /pol/ ever since they discovered it because of the elections. The video may be right also as to their motivations for making these accusations at the time that they did.
I have a theory that many of the youtube kids were even sometimes unknowingly making ads for services by making these videos. Some have association with panda's like in their name or wearing masks for example. Panda kids are drugged and used for porn and possible meet ups. This is how their parents or anyone with access, make money and they become youtube famous.
