They weren't actual adoptions, nor children. It was a figure of speech...as in whenever a new person (adult) moved into the area...she "adopted" them. Invited them for dinners and holidays.

Reference is now gone. I remember seeing it in an obituary back in December. Nothing there anymore, which makes me think there is something to it. The wording was strange; not something you'd say about a woman who had lots of friends.
