Wow I think I owe somebody ten dollars. Did not see this coming at all. Lends a touch of realism, though. Makes no sense to go from spilling your guts and saying you did it and then claiming you are innocent. Must be by reason of insanity.

saying you did it

Define "it". What exactly are the charges and what exactly did he say he did? And how do we know what he said? An article in the NYT is not a reliable source.

That he could fire a single shot and have it go through a (metal) lock and then still be a bullet that could make the hole seen in the top of the computer seems dubious to me. I'm not an expert, but I would expect that firing a lead bullet through a metal lock would result in serious deformation of the bullet.

The story is severely fucked up.

This really could get interesting. Maybe he really was a free range idiot, used by the PTB (who changed the surveillance cam) as a patsy, and now he's trying to fight back. Hard to say.

The federal charge is transporting a firearm and ammunition across state lines The local charges are assault with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm during a commission of a crime of violence.

He's going to fight the assault charge, and if he gets off on that he gets off on the possession of a firearm during commission of a crime. He might just get brandishing and some form of discharge violation that he can claim was accidental, but the problem is intent. He can claim he intended to go after others, but found that they were not there, aborted immediately and meant no harm to anyone on the premises. It's technically not illegal for someone to leave home with intent to kill, but then have a change of heart. It's just a problem brandishing and discharging a firearm especially in DC.
