You mean laicize, not excommunicate. The Vatican has already apologized. And Francis laicized four hundred priests in his first year. Francis also said today that the government leaders should be strong in fighting human trafficking. This is not a coincidence.

Sorry don't know correct terms, not a Roman Catholic. But I do know the 'apology' was weak, vague and not accepted by the victims.
According to this article, he defrocked 400 priests in two years but the Church did not specify if the defrocking were abuse related. To me it is not okay that priests escape public trial and punishment. They should be made known to the community in which they live. I truly hope this Pope is going to be different.
