These coins have an early antecedent in the masonic penny. I'm not saying here masons are pedos. Masons would stamp an ordinary penny with a masonic compass image. (Some lodges mint their own penny coins, I'm just talking about overstamped coins here.)

It's a way for members of a secret society to identify each other. For example, in a strange town go to a bar and pay with your secret society coin. If the barman is savvy, you're in. Well, I suspect there are some meaningful glances and code words exchanged also (or secret handshakes or gestures for the masons) in case you're just some poor schlub passing on the coin.

Sorry, I think my info on Masonic stamped coins is something I read ages ago on a 'conspiracy theory' type site.

If you are actually spending these coins hoping someone will notice you will go through a lot of them.

Still it's interesting that both groups have overstamped coins and makes me wonder how the pedo coins are used.

Why is it so important for freemasons to identify each other? Isn't it supposed to be "just a fraternity"?

Well, they are supposed to help each other out. I'm repeating what I read once. Perhaps it's not so. Apparently you get a coin as part of a particular initiation. The official story is they are just keepsakes:
