Polanski just withdrew from hosting the Cesars, the "French oscars," after protesters threatened a boycott of the show. Polanski didn't withdraw out of shame over what he did, but as a spokesman said, just to put an end to the controversy.

For anyone who doesn't know or who has forgotten the details, Polanski drugged and raped a 13-year-old girl during a photo shoot in 1977 and fled the U.S. rather than face possible imprisonment. Yet much of the establishment, including the press, tends to frame the case as "merely" statutory rape, often with comparisons to more "liberal" Europe (lower age of consent) and different standards during the '70s. Yet at no time has drugging someone and ignoring their rejection (the girl repeatedly told him no) been acceptable.
