I remember reading lolita (English translation). The writing is immersive and brilliant. So much so, that you begin to self-loathingly feel sympathy for Humbert, the predatory old man whose arrested childhood development leads to an unhealthy obsession with the child Dolores. The story is tragic, and it is a grave injustice that it is so often embraced by pedophiles / ephebophiles.

On a side note, I don't recall there being a ping pong table in the original text...but Kubrick always seems to have a darker subplot for the observant.

Lolita was originally written in English.
