The Center for American Progress is not a lobbying firm. It's a non-profit think tank, aka a policy shop. John Podesta created it. Tony did not.
The Podesta Group is a lobbying firm. It is most certainly for profit. John Podesta was already at CAP when the Podesta Group was formed/renamed in 2007. Prior to that Tony Podesta was working with a Republican lobbyist and the firm was called PodestaMatoon.
John Podesta worked with his brother at Podesta Associates which is what the lobbying company was first called from 1988-1993. He left the firm to go work for the Clinton White House. He never returned to his brother's lobbying firm.
There is an CAP advocacy organization called Center for American Progress Action Fund, but I think this is issue advocacy and not client lobbying like the Podesta group would be. There's probably legal reasons this are different. Here is their different emphases.
Short answer: John Podesta doesn't work for his brother's lobbying firm which is separate, from CAP. I wonder how many of Tony's clients have appeared a CAP events.
