It's not a matter of scientifically how it can be explained.. it's a matter of stopping it.. Just like «crazys» can be dangerous -psychopaths or -sociopath, it doesn't matter at some point, because it can have consequences.. Put 'em behind bars, deal with their rehabilitation, but stop it from happening, one way or the other..

I don't see how blackmailing can work when it's just for them. That makes very little sense to me. And that cracked article has some very valid points actually.
It's a psychological tool of control/protection and coherence of operations. «I do this (which I know is bad), but you do it too (and I 've seen you do it), so because we're linked in secrecy through commited immoral/criminal acts, you don't tell about me, I don't tell about you..» Rats protecting other rats.
