Divide and conquer. Most of the White Nationalists are known CIA fronts to push extreme anti-Jew / anti-black rhetoric, to discredit and misdirect. It serves the duel function of putting people off Nationalism /Populism, by allowing Leftists to equate Alt-Right with Nazism and so push low-info right-leaning folks, towards more Establishment positions.
Combined with political correctness - not wanting to be associated with or tarred with 'waycism' - it also prevents centre / left leaning people from seeing beyond the MSM headlines.
Look at the deliberate infighting and rifts caused by some of these Far Right groups. Textbook divide and conquer. We have the same dynamic in the UK with Brexit: the media points to fringe, limited-audience Far Right racism, and uses that brush to tar anyone who disagrees with Open Borders or Globalism.
The attack vector of the MSM is Brexit = racism, Trump = racism, meanwhile the right is sabotaged from within by infighting.
