Full Time 18th Century Farmer

Description:

The 18th century Farm and interpretive site is open to the public Wednesday – Sunday from April through mid-December. From April through December, the Farmer will be stationed around the reproduction Tobacco Barn and fields for 3 days a week and is responsible for the planting and maintaining of field crops such as tobacco, corn, wheat, rye and a young apple orchard. While working on the farm the farmer will engage with the public while explaining their chores, as well as various school group tours using 1st person interpretation. The Farmer will also assist other staff members with the 18th century kitchen garden and the livestock on public view on an as needed basis.

During the remaining 2 days a week, when the Farm is closed to the public (Monday and Tuesday), the Farmer will work at maintaining the farm site grounds and buildings using modern tools and equipment. This will include but is not limited to the tilling of all fields and gardens, mowing grass, upkeep of pathways and more. The Farmer will also properly maintain all the tools and equipment (both modern and reproduction). Examples of modern equipment include a four wheel drive off road vehicle, farm tractor, tillers, trimmers, mowers, hydraulic wood splitter, chainsaws, etc.

Following the administrative re-opening in January, the Farmer will follow a Monday through Friday schedule from January through mid-March. Responsibilities during the winter months will include ongoing maintenance to the 18th century farm site, tools and equipment, splitting firewood, milling of lumber for use throughout the year, planning and implementing new programs with other staff members, etc.

Responsibilities:

The specific duties the incumbent will perform include 40 to 45 hours per week Sunday through Thursday from Mid-March through the end of December. Winter hours from January through Mid-March will be 40-45 hours per week Monday through Friday.

Daily opening and closing of the 18th century farm site

Plant, cultivate and harvest tobacco, corn, wheat, rye and all field crops

Interpret and demonstrate the skills and knowledge appropriate to the daily life and seasons in accordance with an 18th century tobacco farmer to the general public as well as scheduled tours through use of period tools, crops and animals.

This work will be performed in costume in all types of weather conditions

Maintain all landscape and pathway areas of the Farm including the 18th century farm site with brush hog, ride on/push mower, line trimmer and other tools as well as snow removal as needed

Produce lumber and firewood on an on-going basis for all Farm related projects with particular emphasis on stock-piling during the winter months

Run and maintain Farm equipment and vehicles for all related activities

Assist in the execution of pre-planned special events highlighting various aspects of 18th century life

Responsibly supervise both children and adult costumed volunteers on a daily basis

Actively work outdoors in both extreme heat and cold doing heavy physical labor

Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

2+ years of experience in agriculture or skilled trades (mechanics, carpentry, construction, welding, metal work etc.)

2 + years experience with power & hand tools such as chainsaw, band saw, table saw etc.

Self-motivated and able to work independently for extended periods of time

Ability to work accurately, with interruptions, to meet deadlines

Ability to work in a flexible way that allows for changes in assignments and priorities depending upon identified needs of the Farm

Is honest and trustworthy with focus and good judgment being paramount to the position

This is a physically intensive indoor/outdoor position. All applicants should be prepared and able to work in a variety of weather and less than conventional working conditions

This position requires weekend and occasional evening work

Preferred but not required:

Knowledge of 18th century history, particularly Virginia history

Good people and teamwork skills with the ability to work well with the public, staff, and volunteers

Undergraduate degree in agriculture or history or certification in a skilled trade

Compensation: $24,900; federal holidays observance, 3 weeks paid vacation, 2 of which fall over the Christmas holiday, casual work environment and free parking. I was surprised when I saw the salary, especially after reading all that the "farmer" is expected to do. It certainly isn't an acting job. I expected the "farmer" to make at least twice as much. And I would imagine that housing anywhere nearby probably is on the expensive side.
