I think you meant to say "ad hominem." And ad hominem is only valid when used to disprove the assertion made. When attempting to spur the hearer to deeper thought, it's not a logical fallacy at all.

Sometimes, this whole "SATAN ISN'T REAL, RELIGION IS DUMB!" stuff really gets to me. I've not met a single person spouting this stuff who has thought deeply about the subject.
