if you notice - in the "table pic" the doorway in question has cardboard sticking out- probably doing construction at the time, possible they walled it up then - or perhaps was just opened up after the "2 guys at computers" photo
look near the feet of the guy in plaid purple, there seems to be a hole in the wall, or they forgot to photoshop that spot
very strange indeed
and yes he could stand on the rialings in he corner for the photo - that is only way - or a long selfie stick

The plywood is there to make it a smooth floor transition when slid into place.
