You said it "they're being considerate of their hosts. So that the hosts know what to expect". Like others have stated. Why would their "family" go without them? Its just not how social events operate, and frankly never have.
"who will be visiting the week of March16th" definitely an affirmative "will be". Secondly: "Patti and I would like to be include, however, if there are too many people, then we will be happy to sit this one out". Makes no mention of the other members of the family, only "Patty and I". All it is is strange, but in conjunction with everything else, this adds further weight.
