California, New York, Texas and Florida had far, far, far, far more searches for pizzagate than Alaska.

That map is not showing you who ranks highest for searches.

They are showing you which search ranks highest. These are different.

That is true, but keep in mind that if Manhattan had the same population density of Alaska, it would have about 14 residents.

Edit: I understand your point about the somewhat misleading/poorly worded post title, but to have been more specific seemed like a mouthful.

This is how Google explains Google Trends

Note: A higher value means a higher proportion of all queries, not a higher absolute query count. So a tiny country where 80% of the queries are for "bananas" will get twice the score of a giant country where only 40% of the queries are for "bananas".
