It was not a literal adoption, she was an old lady famous for making everyone a "child" of hers, baking, helping, grammaing, that sort of thing. She may or may not be a pedo (after all John turned out bad for a reason) but this particular thing is not a signal OMG WHERE ARE THE MISSING KIDS.
