I agree this seems to be a successful approach, however look at the Dakota Pipeline, they were arrested and abused. Maybe this would be worth it though.
It would get past the communication problem, look at occupy wall street before it was infiltrated and put to an end. Except this time there is a lot more moral weight to push this time than financial corruption. The people that were in attendance came together daily to discuss action plans and strategies on dealing with the enemy. The thing is, is there are more followers than leaders in our world, we only need enough people leading the way before we start getting a following. If people are out on the streets raising awareness, that will get the ball rolling. Next thing you know the media's attempts to misdirect people will be working against them and bringing more attention on the issue.

Historically speaking, protesting works. Look at what happened in Crimea. When enough people come together for 1 cause, nothing can stop them.
