I believe the download page was legit. They tried really hard to discredit that one and move on. Why was there apparently a page on Comet Ping Pongs website that was setup to distribute large files with individual encryption keys for each file? Dont take a rocket scientist to figure out what was likely to be going on with that.
Can someone find a cached version of that page? Or maybe it's in the WayBack machine? Did someone archive it when they found it?
I had my questions about that page too. Someone could have Photoshopped what was already there. Or copied the source and created the page locally. But then again maybe not. I don't know what the answer is. The only way to find out would be to subpoena James Alefantis web hosting company who no doubt have back-ups of the CPP site.
