What's interesting about that charge is his lawyers can probably prove that he legally transported the firearm and then the government would have to prove that he left home with INTENT to commit a crime. He already stated that when he left home, he didn't intend to do anything but look around, thus making it a tossup if they could get a conviction. A little lawyer wrangling back and forth and this is an easy misdemeanor with time already served as the punishment. It could be expunged from his record without anybody knowing in just a matter of days or weeks. End result would be that it looked like he was charged and his record would be clean. Pretty good deal.
You didn't read the article. They have text messages from him to his friends asking if they want to come along and "do some good" or some bullshit. He also says that it's possible a few lives will have to be sacrificed for the good of the many.
