Many people have asked how anyone could be involved with ritual magic and all the things that can go with it, esp. child abuse and sacrifice. I am no expert, but has that every stopped anyone? So it's not going to stop me either. :-) Here is my theory.
First, politicians tend to be narcissists. I don't think that needs a link.
Second, the Law Of Thelema is very appealing to narcissists. Thelema says, "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. Love is the law, love under will." This is probably an appealing idea to many people... but consider: not only does this mean there is nothing you have to do, it means that there is nothing that you cannot do. Nothing is off-limits. Nothing is taboo. How can this not appeal to narcissists?
Now, consider this article. A narcissist "socialite" prefers to die rather than age.

What does aging have to do with anything? Well, "spirit cooking" performance artist Marina Abramović is 70 years old and this is what she looked like: http://www.gosee.us/news/celebrity/what-a-show-gosee-just-loves-performance-artist-marina-abramovic-at-70-with-photos-for-new-york-magazine-by-ruven-afanador-c-o-sarah-laird-good-company-38226/cat
Might her "ageless" appearance alone explain much of her appeal? And she does have appeal; Time magazine, for example, listed her among their "100 Most Influential People of 2014":

tl;dr: I think the key is narcissism. Do perversion and psychopathy also play a part? Doubtless. But those illnesses can express themselves in many ways. Narcissism maybe the key to understanding the appeal of ritual magic, and all the things that may come with it.

"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."
