If you look at the DC weekly paper's write up on Jimmy Comet called something like "From Scratch" it mentions that he did not buy the sign directly from this owner - instead a friend arranged the sale or gave it to him.
And then my friend Eric Hirshfield, who used to own Duplex Diner, was like, “I’m going to buy the Comet sign. You’re opening a restaurant, why don’t you take it?” And I thought, I should totally have that sign, and then I’ll have a name.
