This is my pet theory. I have no basis for believing it but it sort of draws things together.
He was abused by his Dad (his dad seems to seek roles where there are kids - fostering, karate, boy scouts). He is pretty messed up. He intentionally hit the 13 year old with his car to stop him from escaping or to prevent him from telling (dunno).
