I'm no expert, but that looks like a cardboard cutout of the pope.

Even though there is confirmation about the status of the Pope at that time in the U.S. (I'll look for the thread after this), I agree. The shadows do not look natural. I'm trying to find out the title of the book too though now, any ideas?
