In True Detective, there is a group of powerful people in some type of satanic cult. They rape a child, kidnap kids, murder women and other things. I just thought it was interesting that this was the whole topic of the season. I wonder where the writers got the idea from?

Obviously we don't have the power or information to do this, but if there was a map available to pinpoint all last known whereabouts of children before they were abducted. Filter data by year, month, season, moon cycle, etc and look for similarities just like Cohle did. I believe he noticed patters all up and down the east coast and they were all in close proximity to churches (if i remember correctly.)
