Does the Brewster armor have any relation to Caleb Brewster?
He was a member of the Culprer spy ring during the revolution and became a blacksmith later in life (even though he died 80 years before this photo)

For it to stop a battle rifle round it would have had to have been some hefty stuff, bogging the troop down and leaving the wearer vulnerable in close combat.

It would've probably stopped submachine gun or pistols... actually I think it would've been perfect for close quarter, but not melee.
