I don't normally care when celebrities die, but John Prine was different. He actually enriched my life. His music is the soundtrack to some of my happiest moments. Had the great pleasure to see him perform several years ago.
I haven't had waterworks like this morning since Guy Clark died a few years back. Souvenirs always gets me misty eyed anyways, and hearing it this morning just washed all the pollen out of my eyes but good. I have lead a relatively long and interesting life and had met both Prine and Clark. They were friends with a buddy of mine in a certain mountain town I lived in for several years and who happened to be a talented studio musician that played on a lot of the stuff coming out of Boulder in the 70's and 80's and knew pretty much everyone who played the festival circuit and his place was the after show place to be. He's gone now as well.
That's really cool, funny where life can take us sometimes. Guy Clark is another one of my favorites. Some would say both of those guys were a little before my time, but my father listened to good music, or rather music that is good for you. I remember my dad taking us fishing and bringing that old radio, or riding in his old truck down the dirt roads of my hometown. Those men, Willie Nelson, Waylon, and Hank Sr. were the soundtrack to my childhood. Dad got the cancer five years back, but his memory is attached to the music those men made.
My dad's music was stuff like Ray Price, Boots Randolph, Dave Dudley, Del Reeves, etc. 60's-early 70's AM Country type stuff. I tried my hand at the music thing in the 80's. Hard Rock/ Metal. Singer mostly (Never liked the term vocalist- seems too much like a reduction to an instrument rather than a performer), although I could manage to play bass and guitar some. Never made it beyond regional gigs, but one guy who was in the very first band I performed in did manage to make it to the bigtime. You would have to be a serious 80's Metal connoisseur to know his name. Out of the 5 in that lineup him and I are the only ones still on this side of the grass. I left the music scene behind after the 80's and he is still performing to this day.

That's really awesome, thank you for sharing this with me. I play a little myself, never wanted to perform, just love music. Where would we be without music? Scary thought. Anyway, it's been great getting a chance to get some of these things off my chest. Haven't distracted by work in three weeks and I've been building up a bit. I don't believe he died of Chinese AIDS. He was in his 70's, and he used his time wisely when he was here. Just hit me in a weird way, that's all.
