To my mind, it was yet another case of projection, i.e. accusing your enemy of doing the exact thing which you're doing. A useful tactic if you don't get caught in it; you get to defame and wear down your enemy, and if all eyes are on him, they're usually not on you too.
Course if it goes pear-shaped, you end up looking like a gigantic fucking hypocrite and people start wanting to see you hanged.
