Old guy rant: What a bunch of wimps. Back in my day the only people who owned backpacks where hikers. Students carried their books and papers in a shack held with both arms lest shit go flying all over the place. In fact, if there was a female you had the hots for, the best thing that could happen was for her to drop all her books and papers so you could be a white knight and help her pick them up. It was part of the teenage mating ritual.

Females typically carried this thing called "a purse" which was used to store their female products. If you need a backpack to carry your female products you should probably see a doctor because you're bleeding out.

Hey old-timer. I agree with all of that, but I think schools have probably changed since then. I've been out of school for well over a decade, but even when I attended we had more textbooks than would fit in a standard backpack. Parents were actually starting to complain about this, because some kids were having neck/back problems from hauling nearly half their body weight in books/papers.

Ironically enough, the "teenage mating ritual" of helping your crush pick up their stuff came around again during my time in high school, because everyone's backpacks were so full they started carrying stuff again.
