Forbidden Planet

I was going to put that on the list, but it seemed disingenuous due to the fact that I didn't remember much about that movie for some reason.
capnflummox ago
At least half of all 'science fiction' movies are merely horror movies in a sci-fi wrapper. Case and point: Alien and Aliens.
Half of your list isn't even science fiction.
Reverse-Flash ago
90% of the list on most sites have fantasy and horror all over their lists. My picks are science fiction. Just because a movie is scary doesn't preclude it from being science fiction. Change my mind.
capnflummox ago
This isn't about your mind. This is about fact.
I never said "scary". A smart person knows not to put words in others' mouths.
90% of the list "on most sites"... this is not an excuse to mislabel a movie or other work. I don't give a shit what (((90% of the sites))) have on (((their lists))). We're dealing with facts here, moron.
90% of movies listed as 'science fiction' are in fact horror (not scary!) movies in a sci-fi wrapper.
Reverse-Flash ago
How are Alien and Aliens not science fiction? My opinion is that some movies do traverse two genres. Those two are candidates.
capnflummox ago
It's almost as if you failed to read the three sentence post I made. Here's the important part:
Reverse-Flash ago
I think you are correct. And yes, you are also correct.

Dark City (1998)
Back to the Future (1985)
Ghostbusters (1984)
SpaceHunter (1983)
Capricorn One (1978)
Push (2009)
KrakenCentaur ago
You put Dark City at the top of your list. Good, you do not need your memory altered.
ElDulce ago
I just watched Push yesterday. Such a good movie. I think I might call it more fantasy with the whole superhero thing, but I get where you are going.
Doglegwarrior ago
Dune
ggolemg ago
Primer
Gattaca
Starship troopers
Day the earth stood still
Metropolis
Robocop
Close encounters of the third kind
Solaris
Brazil
Fire in the sky
And the others mentioned by everyone else here
LordSporkington ago
I was wondering when I was going to see "Primer" on one of these lists... So "Solaris" the remake (which wasn't as awful as I was expecting) or the original (with that tedious fucking 45 minute, real time bumper cam view of the Moscow freeway system?)
Doglegwarrior ago
Dune was great
ggolemg ago
Fuck yeah it was, books honestly were much better, and the made for tv movie was really good.
Doglegwarrior ago
Agree. Books where awsome i read up to the 3rd one then heard that the guy went liberal fsggot in the later books so just stopped before i got to that point .. ive reread the first one at least 3 times.
ggolemg ago
There were always the slight gay undertones, but yeah they become overtones later on. If you haven't seen the made for tv movie it's worth checking out.
Diggernicks ago
Gatraca is meh tier and only barely.
Deathperception ago
The 5th Element
& believe it or not,"The Running Man" had an important story to tell& I thought it was well done.
Reverse-Flash ago
Primer, Close Encounters of the Third Kind would make my top 15 list.
spaceman84 ago
They Live and The Thing are not on the list. You dun goofed OP.
Reverse-Flash ago
The Thing would likely make my top 20 list. They Live has a great story to tell, but it wouldn't come into play until I put a top 30 list together. Just my 2 cents.
WORF_MOTORBOATS_TROI ago
That seems like cheating
Reverse-Flash ago
Do you honestly think I ran out of movies I love and had to double up? Those are all my favs. Now hush-up and buy the next round!
WORF_MOTORBOATS_TROI ago
No, but it still seems like cheating, like you only made 8 selections
Reverse-Flash ago
Here's 11-20 in case you were wondering what I passed up to make my top 10 list:
Looper (2012)
Blade Runner (1982)
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (2004)
Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
Jurassic Park (1993)
The Incredible Shrinking Man 1957)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977)
A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
Brazil (1985)
WORF_MOTORBOATS_TROI ago
I never saw Looper, thanks for the reccomendation
Woot balde runner
I never really thought of esotsm as a scifi movie
Edge of tomorrow is pretty solid, i dont really like that one actor, whats his nuts captain scientology, much but he's pretty good here. The other movie i liked him in was war of worlds. Both roles took advantage of his innate false-overconfidence by undermining it instead of trying to pretend it was legit like a lot of other movies he's in. The false "OHMAGAW GURL POWER SUPERSOLDIERETTE" bit would have been obnoxious if it didnt fit, plus that bitch gets smoked like twenty times so thats pretty satisfying.
Kind of a stretch to call jurassic ark sci-fi, it seems more of an action/suspense movie than anything else. Maybe that's a bias from having read the book. I saw this movie before I read the book, and this is what convinced me that it's best to seec the movie before you read the book because then you can think both are great. With Congo, Sphere, and Timeline I read the book before I saw the movie and I thought the movies were a big disappointment.
Men can't sh4ink unless they get into a cold pool.
Close encounters of a third kind is pretty good, but it doesnt feel like scifi to me because the setting is normal reality. There ares no unusual setting conditions thsa t you have to accept in order to appreciate the plot, it's just 'normal guy in normal world goes wacky because some cracker ass aliens be fuckin with his brain and sheeit".
Star Wars.
Meh. I heard spielberg is a pedo he probably made this so he could fuck that one kid up the butt
I've tried to watch this on multiple occassions but I think i fell asleep every time. I have jo idea if it's good.

I know it is considered the fine wine of science fiction movies but for some reason it just didn't make the top 10. It made my top 20 though.

It's an ok early 90s action movie, hardly James Cameron's finest
Deathperception ago
Loved that movie. One of the few sequals that exceeded expectations.
The rest sucked,imo.
spaceman84 ago
It's been overrated for a long time. The original was a better film.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
I always heard Alien was a horror movie.
ElDulce ago
I consider Sifi to be a medium. You have have different movies made in a style that have different feelings. You have funny sifi like Hitchhicker's Guide. You have Dramatic Sifi like Moon. You have action sifi like Edge of Tomorrow. You have horror Sifi like Alien.
Science Fiction is just a way to use the future to bring attention to things in the present.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
Makes sense.
Star Wars is epic storytelling in scifi setting.
ElDulce ago
Yup, You could probably make the argument that Safety Not Guaranteed would be a Rom-Com Sifi film.
The same thing happens with Kung-fu. There is funny like Kungfu Hustle, there is epic like House of Flying Daggers or Hero, there is sifi like The One there is action like Chocolate. Though granted in the west people usually just go for the action Kungfu flicks.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
dude truth
kung fu hustle is legit
Deathperception ago
More than 1 thing can be true at the same time.
capnflummox ago
Yes, but in these cases, most science fiction movies are just horror movies in a sci-fi wrapper.
I would not, and do not, consider those movies as 'science fiction'. Case and point: Alien and Aliens. Those are horror movies.
Deathperception ago
I had the pleasure of reading all of H.P. Lovecraft's works in one volume & I still claim itz a 60/ 40 blend. The library had 2 threaten me to return it.

12 Monkeys, the HBO Westworld series season 1 and Predator. I’m in agreement with the original Terminator and 2001 from your list.
spaceman84 ago
Original Predator is sublime. Despite having the simplest plot, it's damn near flawless.
ggolemg ago
It's nearly a perfect movie.

If you haven’t yet, you should watch the 12 monkeys TV show it’s surprisingly very good
LordSporkington ago
Really? I tried the first episode and it just... it really rubbed me the wrong way. Was that a pilot, where the rest of teh season has a different feel?
Native ago
Oops, I have a dueling convo shitting on Game of Thrones and didn’t realize this was about 12 monkeys.
The first two episodes are pretty bland (as all tv shows are) because it’s setting the stage and building up characters. However it quickly improves after that and every season is better than the last, which in my opinion is rare
LordSporkington ago
So it's not just a member berries cash grab?
I'll give it another day in court, thanks!
Native ago
No cash grab. 100% original story line with a few Easter eggs to the movie sprinkled into the seasons.
I don’t make promises often to random strangers, however, with such shite Hollywood entertainment these days, 12 monkeys is pleasantly surprising.
Native ago
I read the books first before I watched the tv show. I would figure the first few episodes look confusing because there are so many characters.
At this point, don’t even bother with the show because the ending ruins it.
And yes the rest of the show is high drama.
Reverse-Flash ago
Movies.
amendthediscourse ago
I know. Too good not to mention though.
Reverse-Flash ago
I haven't seen it, but it is on my short list.
amendthediscourse ago
Shorten that list to one. Obviously entertainment is subjective, but, I couldn’t recommend it more.
