Something reducing the effectiveness of dialog on Voat is the default limit of child comment levels: only a mere two levels of child comments are displayed, subsequent levels are hidden under a tiny n reply expand link.
This restricts the flow of comments considerably, making threads essentially just relevant to the first couple child replies as most won't be manually clicking each expand link (or even noticing it).
I've seen this myself just today where an answer to an upvoted comment was replied to in the third level deep but since it was hidden most won't be seeing it.
Could the admins consider increasing the expanded child comment level to something more reasonable like Reddit? Most child comments are expanded by default there unless it's an extremely popular submission whereupon deeper level comments begin to be collapsed.

There also doesn't appear to be a user setting for this, so all are experiencing the same truncated thread view.

Agreed. if there's less than, say 100 comments, there is really no reason to collapse the comments.
I've pretty much given up on making replies to anything after the second-level comment for just this reason.
