Slightly confused on this. Why not dual boot something like Ubuntu? Ubuntu is free to download, toss on a USB thukbdrive, and boot system off it.
Either slap onto a second HDD, spare machine, or dual Bhutan current PC (back up just in case). During install of Ubuntu it will ask if you want to install along side with Windows/macOS.
Ubuntu is suggested because steam targets it, so best chance of support.
What game is this, and what system requirements. I probably have an older spare PC I can toss a binary on.
Very yes. You might not get enough skookum to chooch it along at a playable smoothliness but as long as you got enough angry pixies in central prostelytizing unit you might getter going.
Oh hell yeah. Virtualbox is free if you don't ha e a solution yet. Easy to setup. Might not GPU pass through very well, but depending on game might not be an issue.
You can vm ubuntu but it's not as fast and I'm guessing you want to know if your games are real time.
Just dual boot it's way simpler. If you have a desktop it's easy if you have a laptop just look up that your laptop can handle the dual boot. Some companies like Lenovo make it notoriously difficult.

You can use a Visual machine, linux is not hard to install on them, they do not have requirements or licence to install their OS.

your comment mentions a few options that sound extremely interesting. is it possible to virtual-machine this?

If the game needs a good graphics card, virtualization is not a great solution for a Linux novice.
