If we're trying to be the antithesis of Reddit, why does this look and feel exactly like Reddit?
Why are the more popular /v 's named identically after Reddit's most popular /r 's ?
I think we're having an identity crisis already ... trust me, I want to be a part of this mass Exodus, but I can't believe this is like the bizzarro world Reddit while attempting to be 'so different' ...
Another thing, you have people moderating things like /v/chicago who don't even live in Chicago, and admits in his own posts. That's just like Reddit. A bunch of guys from the suburbs pretending like they're Chicagoans, controlling the flow of data, posts, and manipulating votes. You have to have higher standards if you want to be taken serious ... otherwise, guys like this will turn this place into exactly what we're all trying to avoid over at Reddit.

What is "voat"? I am assuming it's wordplay on "vote", but i can't be sure. Is it an acronym?
Either way, i just want to say at a glance, the community on here seems human. I've rarely posted on reddit in the past, because of the times when i have done, i've been downvoted into oblivion for "going against the hivemind", renderring my account useless due to restrictions on getting too many downvotes. Effectively getting silenced and unable to reply to any comments for long periods of time. Hopefully this place isn't full of spammer/robots voters aswell.... time will tell.

All hail VOAT!!!!
Thank you for existing
That is all

is this made from reddit source or some other or did you make it from scratch?

Is there going to be an app available for Voat? I mostly browse on my phone so that would make this a lot better :)

To prevent the incessant downvoting that plagues reddit, are you considering making a downvoat deduct a karma point from your account?
Other places do this, and it seems like an effective way to keep it at bay, maybe it would also help diminish karma whoring, if people gets used to the idea of karma being a transient thing and not something which will go down as your legacy.

Loved the Voat.
My question is ... will have more choices of themes?
I would love that had the theme Yotsuba. Or 9gag (not as heavy as).

What actions are you going to take to ensure that there is no such moderator abuse as seen on reddit? What actions are you going to take to ensure lack of censorship? What kind of visibility will the public have to moderator and admin actions and decisions? How will you try to curb things like downvoat brigading and other such abuse of the system?
MyNameIsDog ago
It's probably been asked before, but it seems as if Voat is an exact clone of Reddit. Shouldn't there be features to set it apart?
PS: There probably are. I'm in the process of exploring it.

What are the commitments of the admins for privacy and transparency toward its user base?
Second, how Voat and the admins behind the site hope to avoid the pitfalls that killed Digg and are killing Reddit at the moment (i.e. power users, shadowban, etc) ?

People who generalise and use the term "redditors" like he does seem to be sjw types. They set up a strawman stereotypical redditor and ascribe negative easily attackable traits to paint them as. It's like a shitredditsays thing.

My progressive ass damn well knows the difference between a liberal leftist and an illiberal leftist. I wont let them co-opt the left by insinuating that I'm some conservative for not letting them police language and expression. However when someone lives at the south pole, everything appears to be north to them. So to use the term "mild" is a gross misrepresentation.

What is voat's official methodology for banning? Will voat be implementing shadow bans? Or will you be more user-friendly and alert the person that they were banned?
Will voat have any tricky "gotcha" rules?
Where will those rules, or Terms of Service, be posted?
Reddit has draconian rules regarding posting someone's real name (called "doxing"). Doing so gets your account shadowbanned from reddit. Unfortunately, this can happen on accident and completely innocently, There are many models or TV actors whose names are posted in profiles, but who are not completely famous celebrities. For example, a pretty model is posted, someone asks who it is, you reply with their full name. You are shadowbanned for "doxing". (reddit admins don't care for such nuance.)
For those who are out of the loop, "Shadow banning" is a weird way that reddit bans accounts. You cannot tell you are banned, and finding out is extremely difficult, it often requires a 3rd-party website. Usually a week passes before you realize what is happening, The only indication visible to you is that your comments and submissions are not being voted on.
astarkey12 ago
You could easily just make a new account to get around this. It's not an effective preventative measure and is only a minor (albeit annoying) hassle.
QnA ago
> we simply have completely different outlooks on how a media aggregator should be managed.
What do the reddit admins do that you disagree with? Looking over their very short list of global rules (I only count 5), they don't seem particularly harmful or dubious. They actually seem like common sense (don't vote manipulate, no CP, etc...).
Other than that, it looks like anything goes. Moderators on reddit are free to run their subreddits any way they wish. Each subreddit is run differently. The fact you don't differentiate this, talk about it and/or try to pretend reddit is some monolithic entity which you disagree with seems a bit naive and incredibly opportunistic. You're trying to siphon off the traffic from reddit when people get unhappy with individual subreddits and their mods, and not reddit itself. It looks like you don't actually care about reddit, and are focused more on growing your website. To do that, you have to convince people your website is somehow better than reddit.
How to you propose to fight the problems reddit as whole faces, which will certainly become an issue here as well? Those problems don't just disappear because you're at a new website. Those problems are vote manipulation, intricate spam rings, witch-hunting, etc... Reddit has the money to keep a legal team on retainer which shields them from a lot of things. If some huge disaster like thefappening happens on this site, do you have the legal resources required to fight it? Or would you give in to the pressure and censor things? These are the big issues which nobody has brought up, it's like everyone is blissfully ignorant and unaware of the real issues that will inevitably effect this site if it is even slightly successful.
So I've read all the VOAT team has said about reddit and I'm not impressed in the slightest. You offer an alternative to reddit, but no alternative solutions. You're incredibly vague when it's brought up. Sorry, but after checking this place out, you can't hope to compete with reddit. Many of tried and failed. There's a reason why reddit is so successful and there's a reason why it's lasted 10 years. It's because during that time, they've found and utilized the best (and perhaps most innovate) possible solutions. Solutions which may not be immediately obvious or may not make sense until you yourself are in the same situation with the same experience. You can't tell a child what being burned feels like, they have to experience it themselves to understand.
Oh, and I almost forgot. It's also incredibly apparent that either you or other users are using sock puppets to make this place look busier than it is. Is sockpuppetry something that is allowed here? If so, then carry on I guess. If not, you may want to look into that. If it's you (or other admins) personally doing it, well, I guess if it's working...

Thanks for the respons and you are right, I am not angry at you, just angry that I spent 5+ years at reddit and contributed quite a bit so I felt invested in the site. As of late I feel betrayed and so yes I am overly sensitive regarding things that have happened over the past few years. I appreciate your understanding and am really excited about voat, I just don't want to see the same shit happen in 5-10 years like it did a reddit. There are a lot of awesome things that happen over there and that was one of the reasons why I loved it but the bad has started to outweigh the good.
Thanks again for taking the time to respond and for understanding my tone, i meant no disrespect.

I don't think that's good enough. Even if the reddit admins stayed out of it, censorship by mods would still be a problem. I don't know what the solution is, but some sort of accountability needs to exist. Some semblance of democracy. It's hard to think of something that wouldn't be subvertible, but basically mods should have the approval of the members of the sub.
As a start, I think all mod actions should be visible. We moderate to stop bullshit derailing the thread, it would seem that there would be no harm in displaying in a separate section of the site all of a mods actions so that users could see whether they are moderating fairly.
Illegal stuff or things that violate site-wide rules is different, perhaps mods should have a different button when they delete illegal stuff or doxxing, and although the stuff would vanish right away, admins would be able to see what they deleted and boot them if they are abusing the function to censor. That requires trust in admins though, and I don't know of any way to proceed that doesn't require trusting someone.
There's the idea of trust networks that may solve this whole problem in the long term maybe. But the idea hasn't been tested and it's not clear that it wouldn't be subverted by people declaring 'trust' in each other factionally, to further their agenda.
Lots of ideas to be tried. I believe that online forums that delete illegal stuff as well as doxxing and abuse, whilst not being able to descend into censorship of inconvenient ideas, are possible in principle. We just need the right algorithms to crowdsource trust from the users.
Nurdoidz ago
Darn it... was just about to call you out on it.

I guess my use of those subreddits was a bad example. Shock imagery means nothing to me and I make sure that if I don't want to see it, I don't visit that sub. I guess my point was to try and find a way to stop subs encourage things such as violence against women, or pedophilia. There will be subs that are created that might be legal technically, but the overall intent is clearly illegal. It's that type of thing that I have a problem with, I just didn't do a very good job of conveying it.

I'll use askreddit as an example. If they never deleted content, it'll be like it was before. Just loads of sex questions and asking for porn links.
While some may like it, the majority don't even if they get outnumbered by the votes. We've all seen in it, in all large subreddits. Democracy doesn't work on reddit and it won't when voat gets larger.
Teh_Sauce_Guy ago
The other thing is, there is actually blatant racism on reddit. It's not like "KILL ALL BLACKS", but a hyperbolic accurate representation would be, as I have already said, "I'm not racist, but I hate all black people.
Reddit is primarily composed of white neckbeards.

I'm not acting like I'm being attacked. I am being attacked. You called me an SJW, which is an attack on me, because I am not an SJW.

You were added manually to apply css changes as far as I recall. You should not be able to register a sub now or be invited to moderate one.

You should probably look into that.
I maxed out my sub count right before @Teh_Sauce_Guy added me as a mod to /v/HTML. I asked to be removed from a few CSS test subs that I was added by @InfiniteSpaces, which freed up a few subs in my mod list. I was then added as a mod to /v/html. After that event (180 days ago), I created:

What do you say to that?

You don't actually believe that, do you? I mean, it doesn't even make sense. Both GG and anti GG people doxxed each other. Both were shadowbanned for doing it. It's just there were a LOT more GGers doing it so more of them were shadowbanned. Also, GGers are some of the most entitled little shits so they whined a shitload louder about how unfair it was for them to be shadowbanned.

I think SJW is just a term for people who disagree with you on Reddit for the most part. With the Archangelle in your name, I'd assume that you're part of /r/ShitRedditSays, so I'd liken it to the way that many followers of said subreddit consider anyone who disagrees with them an MRA.
Don't take this as an insult or anything, as I don't 100% disagree with you guys on everything - I would argue that "mildly progressive" can be a slight understatement in some cases though. I do have a question or two though if you don't mind, considering that you seem to be a mod of SRS (again, going by the Archangelle).
Firstly, is contextual power a suitable replacement to institutional power in the racism = prejudice + power thing? Secondly, if not, does being prejudiced/bigoted make you as much of a twat/dick (whichever you prefer; I know you guys ain't fond of gendered slurs but the word twat is vital to my Britishness and continued survival) as being racist by the aforementioned definition? I mean, if you're racist by that definition I don't like you, but if you're racist by the dictionary definition but not the academic definition I still don't like you, if you get what I'm saying, because that person is still a bit of a bastard.
Thanks. I was going to ask these on SRS at some point, but this is a good opportunity to talk to a possible mod and not get the slightly typical "lol stupid questions" response. My friends and I have been talking about these, and hearing different opinions is interesting, particularly since one person is pretty "Tumblr-esque" to use the Reddit definition, and another is thinking of voting UKIP soon as a protest vote. Thanks!
mintbanana ago
Thats an SJW no no word, sure ur not a SRS shill?
mintbanana ago
This isn't tactics, disagreeing with something someone said is normal discussion.
Lets settle up like Gentlemen, eh sir? tips fedora
Fair point, although my game was to counter one example with another view on the same example. Given my evidence was anecdotal (someone saying they told kamen to appoint different mods, but wouldn't listen) and so is the evidence of the person i was replying to, on this example we're a draw. Right?
So, to defend my position, i have to bring up other evidence which makes the original comments "this happened, so this is how the admins act every time, on every subreddit" out to be a false generalization.
What about /r/xkcd, which for a long time, was squatted by an inactive mod soccer (who posted once every 2 months so as not to be /r/redditrequest'able), and a bunch of kamen alts below it, which were IP banned when he got chucked1, then when kamen got chucked, the next lowest down mod redditrequested the sub and merged it with /r/xkcd, like the userbase mostly wanted (even counting the SRD/SRS-lite brigaders inserting themself into the drama).
Review some evidence: 2 3 4 5
Some of which corroborates my story of kamen rolling a lot of alts, and having been "chucked" or banned sitewide, permanently, and any identified future alts will be banned too, by IP addres, i.e. ALL alts that the mods can see belong to the user.
So, back to my point, this is an example of One User vs the Admins, not the admins conspiring against all users in the Name of The Mighty Fempire.
Anyway, lets continue with the rest of your post:
You just yourself used [Citation Needed] (dank meme bro) then go against the spirit of that by asserting something unprovable by either of us, only the admins know that for a fact.
The origin of the content?! Like ad hominem? I dont understand how im attacking the user and not the words they're saying. They're making unfounded generalizations about all of reddit on an isolated event.
Im not discrediting their source (there was none) rather than refuting their point, im not saying the user is a "conspiratard" (personal attacks), i said they were spinning an exaggerated claim about all admins from one event.
You use the words "valid foundation", but im not sure whats invalid about calling someone out on saying ALL REDDIT ADMIN ARE A SHIT with only one recent drama to base that on, what foundation do i need to escape your Le Forum Spies dogma trap?
Meanwhile, you just esentially went "no u". I'm well aware im trying to bitchslap a retard here, and im probably wasting my time, but it was fun all the same. Good day sire, *tip* *tip* *tip*

Combative_Douche ago
We disagree, and you can't handle that.
gummz ago
Will you limit moderators to a number of subverses per IP or something like that? So no one can become a power user like on reddit.
Combative_Douche ago
That actually has more to do with the word itself than what you meant by it. Many people associate "egalitarian" with white MRAs because that's who's usually using it. The ideas behind egalitarianism itself are completely in line with what they believe. They just don't like the word because it's usually used when someone is arguing against or dismissing feminism. In fact, feminism strives for egalitarianism.
I suppose that argument could be made. I personally think it's only true in rare cases. Especially because MRAs mostly self identify as "libertarians", but that's mostly because they're largely middle to upper class straight white men who would most benefit from a weaker government. And while libertarians don't entirely fall all the right side of the line, that's where they are for the most part.
Many many many people who disagree with you. You're again misinterpreting things. They don't oppose the rights of men, they oppose the "Men's Rights Movement™". It's a very important distinction. They see many flaws within the MRM™ and their criticisms of it are not an attack on the rights of men.

Why can i not post a link if it has already been posted before?
Also, can you grand me moderation over /v/communism, /v/socialism and /v/anarchism. All the mods are inactive and I would like to prevent what happened on reddit. Special attention goes to /r/communism, since the mods seems to have quite strong sjw tendencies. Or should i post on /r/subverserequest ?

gummz ago
What do you think of limiting the amount of subs a moderator can moderate by IP?
Nurdoidz ago
This wouldn't work so well when these mods use VPNs and other methods to change their IP address.
gummz ago
It's hardly a definite solution, but having both IP and user limits on subs for mods is better than nothing.
Combative_Douche ago
Wow your brain must really hurt after stringing together that faulty rationalisation. I mean, surely it would have been easier to just accept that there are people who don't agree with you.
You guys want an echo chamber even more than SRS. You guys really have a lot more in common than you're willing to admit. The only difference is people would laugh in your face if you spoke your views in real life. At least SRS is on the right side of history while you guys look like the final KKK members who can't admit they've lost.
Combative_Douche ago
Correlation is not causation. Sure, you might get banned from a sub for posting personal info and then ALSO get shadowbanned by the admins. But the only way in which the two are connected is that you shared personal info. It broke both the subreddit's rules and the site-wide rules. So that makes sense. I get the feeling you were trying to imply that somehow mods have influence over the admins and can get them to shadowban someone if want. Not true.
Huh? You're saying the admins are after liberals? That's an interesting take. I mean, SJWs are the ones on the liberal side of things...
Exactly. The whole thing is ridiculous.
Maybe. I mean, mods do A LOT of work that the admins would need to do if mods didn't exist. So of course admins appreciate mods. Especially mods who enforce reddit's rules. I see no problem with this. Though I don't think they're given any more leeway on things, they just get more attention from the admins.
Yeah, I'm not sure you have much of an understanding of the political spectrum and what it means.
Um... things get banned when they break the rules. Is that really that difficult to understand? They were witch-hunting and doxxing mods they didn't like. Of course it got banned. Enforcing rules is not censorship.

I am subscribed almost exclusively to small subreddits, and I don't care much about the drama that you guys choose to deal with. Are you planning to grow into small niches, or will you be trying to coax the circlejerk on the front page into a different direction, thereby cloning it in the process?

We've all been talking about some sort of way to limit new user accounts in the future, since I'd say it's now a law of the web that the more users a site has, the more the quality diminishes.

My only concern with this is that it is hosted with C# which means it uses window server which is also apart of the prism. Do you plan on moving to a bsd or linux at some point? 49 minutes. Oh god. This again, i listened to this ages ago, and they were equating moderator bans to shadowbans, which makes this a shit source of information, in ease of understanding (49 RAMBLING MINUTES), in accuracy, in you simply being able to answer the fucking question and name names. Plus its like a "i heard from my friend" kind of source, at least Kamen links lots of facts.
One event. One moderator. 10 Sockpuppets. One ban across all puppets. Subs with no active accounts moderating it are free to petition for takeover, just like here: /v/subverserequest.
I read it, it was nothing new, i am the metacancer. Reading one source (kamens pasta) of information doesn't make you able to even name names of admins who are "SRS" though, are you really aware of whats going on, or just following the lead?

The problem is, reddit (where a lot of the Voat community is from) loves to label literally everything as an SJW. I call someone out for saying something racist and they're like "durr but I said I'm not racist you're just a stupid SJW fuck you". And when I try to tell them that they actually were being racist, they're like "ugh stupid SJW can't be reasoned with".
On another note, I dislike both sides of the "rights" spectrum. SJWs are all like "HURR DURR KILL ANYBODY WHO IS CISGENDER, WHITE, OR MALE" and reddit is the opposite, "DURR HURR KILL ANYBODY WHO IS GAY, NOT WHITE, OR FEMALE". This is obviously a generalisation and hyperbole, but it paints the picture quite well, don't you think?
On another note, I called out an SJW on tumblr and they completely freaked out at me and called me a racist white demon. They got the racist and white part wrong :P.
decoupler ago
I'd argue that SJW is a label applied to a specific subgroup while "reddit" is a whole website. The "reddit" circle includes various people of radically different beliefs, while "SJW" is supposed to only be applied to a subset.
Hence, generalizations about SJWs are potentially quite accurate. If a given individual isn't a "feels before reals" type or a "literally everything is misogyny", then the label has been misapplied.
On that point, I'd agree with you that the label is overused.
Teh_Sauce_Guy ago

And I absolutely agree with the upvote anything. There are literally users which go into threads and UPVOTE EVERY SINGLE COMMENT in a thread that they reply to. Holy fucking shit.

I have, but one suggestion, do not ever, under any circumstances, call yourself the front page of the internet or some similar bullshit.
In hindsight that was when Reddit started to turn sour, the hubris of the hipsterdom in charge.
one mind, one voat.
canuck1701 ago
Ooooh are we playing the "replace words" game? I've got a few for SJW posts. Replace "men" "white" "cis" or "straight" with anything else, and you can see just how bigoted SJWs are!
brianpurkiss ago
Oh! And a built in polling feature would be great.
brianpurkiss ago
Will there be a way to gild comments? It's always fun to highlight really good comments.
Or buy a reddit-gold like premiums subscription? There's lots of potential for some sort of paid premium features. Reddit gold is such a great idea, but there's little to no reason to actually upgrade. If there were some additional features to give incentive to upgrade to whatever Voat's version of Reddit Gold is, then I would likely be very happy to shell out.

What's your stance on people running bots (autowikibot or any gimmick bot)?
Steven_Universe ago
I was going to ask whether this was just a clone of reddit, but already I see the formatting on the commenting is much better. Instead, I ask, what things do you think set Voat apart from sites such as reddit?
DannyS ago
Nice to meet you guys. This looks like a cool place with a lot of potential. How do you intend to expand it? Are you going to be advertising? Also, with a predicted influx of reddit users, will you be upgrading your servers and working on better site speed?
(Last thing: If any of you are in the neighbourhood, I'm starting a set on uncensored Canadian politics. So far I've got ONpol, ABpol, and BCpol up. Still working on the other provinces and territories :) You should drop by!)
escapefromreddit ago
I think the idea of voting on mods would be a game changer for voat, and allow it to be more than just a reddit clone
Teh_Sauce_Guy ago
Hah. Democracy is almost always a complete disaster - just look at the US. This will turn Voat into a politics simulator, into a popularity contest. It won't be about who's most eligible to run the sub, it will be about who is best at convincing people to suck their dicks.
You could ask "are you saying that users won't consider all the factors and just vote for what the hivemind wants!?", to which the response is "exactly". Users - including me - are stupid. I myself have been voted in as a mod democratically on a website before (was a fair few years ago), and I was absolutely not a suitable candidate for a moderator position (at least not at the time. I'm more confident that I can be responsible now). To highlight why I was a bad choice, I think one sentence should be sufficient, since there's no need to go into a full list of my shortcomings: I was literally permabanned from the website in question, and had already been banned for 2 years. I stuck around because of 1) A database error that has never occurred since meant that the ban for some reason stopped working and 2) The mods decided not to ban me again, for whatever reason. Maybe they thought I was some wizard hacker or something. I don't know.
tradesbadelynge ago
Not the best idea. You know how reddit was overcome by SJWs. They come here vote out the mods and replace with others. Not great.
Or what if a mod creates a rule that isn't liked but in the long run is great? We've all seen how large subreddits turn out. That crowd voting is not good.
TH_ ago
Allowing the community to rate the mods seems like a pretty good idea but what happens if a situation occurs, lets throw out a completely hypothetical situation here, where someone from one subverse cluster gets moderator status on another subverse that belongs to another cluster and those from the original group brigade and vote them up as moderator?
The voting system itself would have to consider who is voting on what moderator, how long they've been subscribed to the specific subverse prior to voting, how fast the votes came in, and how long that moderator has been a mod of that subverse as well. Even then brigading a moderator into a positive status would work.
Either way. Communities voting in a user as a moderator or communities rating moderators with a vote system both seem like they have the potential to be abused but hey what doesn't, right? You can't account for everything.
Scimitar66 ago
Yes, "Subverse imperialism" is not an inviting concept.
TH_ ago
Which means if we don't want this place filled with collusion and meta cancer we'll need to be careful from here on out.
escapefromreddit ago
If user has been a member of x subverse for x amount of time, they have the ability to vote on the performance of the mods of that subverse. Perhaps "possible brigading alerts" where a unusual amount of votes for a certain mod are detected, because it may not be brigading, it may be that said mod has abused their powers in some way and the members of that verse are downvoting because of this behavior.
cointelpro_shill ago
They are actually offended, you know. All of this business has created actual feelings of persecution in white males. It's no wonder they're paranoid about SJWs policing reddit... they've been convinced that armies of 16-year-old girls on tumblr are being mobilized to hate their guts and overthrow the patriarchy.
Given that they used to rag on SRS and SJWs for always "looking to be offended", it's ironic that they're the ones who are offended now. But that's the crux of this whole biscuit, isn't it? They feel like they can connect the dots all the way back to the SCUM Manifesto.
Teh_Sauce_Guy ago
No, this is a bad idea. Content is deleted for a reason, eg. CP or other bad content. And saying that "just don't display it if that's the reason" then all it needs is putting CP as the reason every time.
Teh_Sauce_Guy ago
The difference is brigading is also an expression of your opinion.
hrkristian ago
Technically you're correct.
Brigading however isn't just that, it's also censorship.
Punching a guy in the face is expressing your opinion, but it also has the cool side-effect of often shutting people up, too.
In this case, two negatives makes a positive; stopping brigading stops censorship. An analogy for this is the Battle of the Black Gate (LOTR.)
The King and his soldiers are surrounded by a massive force pummeling them in waves, if a vastly superior friendly force had come to their aid, they'd have no way of saving them, because the orcs have already wiped out everyone and the King by the time the help can get through the horde.
In case anyone were wondering:
Orcs = Brigading group
King = Poster
Help = Potential upvoters.
Cat ago
Expression should necessarily be limited in how you infringe on others' rights to expression. The US constitution was drafted with the statement from the Declaration of Independence in mind. That is, everyone has the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The idea is that a major purpose of governing authorities is to enact and enforce rules preventing persons from depriving one another of one of these without due process. A just administration should also have a hand in the manner, insomuch as these are violated within their realm of control.
When you brigade, it quashes someone's voice, effectively are infringing on their right to liberty (in expression). It doesn't matter that your quashing is done through shouting them down, rather than a more physical manner like blocking them.
Arguably, you can make a case about pursuit of happiness, but that is a whole lot more subjective, especially insomuch as one's pursuit of happiness can be at odds with another's.
Teh_Sauce_Guy ago
Well I don't know about this because I'm not American but downvoting someone is an expression of my opinion, is it not? And if I were to view their profile to see that maybe they might be an okay person and was just in a bad mood or something, but then I see piles upon piles of ignorant/hateful/etc. comments, I am going to go and downvote each one that fits those criteria (and leave the ones that don't).
And then there's defining brigading. Let's say there's a discussion on a big sub and someone links to a comment or post because it's relevant to the post. There will be a huge influx of users which will then see the post and either upvote it or downvote it (depending on their views etc.). Often these views will be the same and you have mass upvoting and downvoting, purely by accident.
Sure, implementing non-participation is no problem at all - but don't you think it's infringing on my free speech to not be able to express my opinion by downvoting the linked content? What if only I and/or a few people see it, what's the harm? And then it's okay to vote on it as long as not many people see it? Now we have freedoms being blocked simply by the amount of people that see it - which means that my opinion will end up not mattering where I can vote, and mattering where I can't.
iownyou ago
No, downvoting was never meant to be an expression of opinion. Upvotes were meant to be used to upvote relevant and thoughtful comments while downvoting and thus hiding irrelevant ones. Someone might have a different opinion than you, but if it is thoughtful and based in fact, its your duty to upvote it, not hide it simply because you dont like it
lawofchaos ago
I'm so glad it's not just me that feels this way about it. Though I wouldn't go so far as to make it my duty to upvote or downvote something, there is also the option of not voting on it at all.
I think people confuse the voting with expressing themselves because of the Facebook 'like' but it's not the same thing in this case. Expressing yourself is actually responding and providing your input to the conversion.
Cat ago
It's not the downvoting itself that's the issue, but when group action goes from incidental (which is as the term is: incidental) to quasi-organized. That's how I define brigading. And bringing it all back to my original point, freedom of speech is a right insomuch as it is not used to abridge the rights of others, examples of which I will provide further on.
Quasi-organized is probably best exemplified by meta subs on Reddit. The meta subs are fairly difficult to deal with, since, by their nature, they shine a spotlight on a very specific part of the site itself, and tend to attract like-minded folks. You have a like-minded user group that scours comments and threads for things to link, usually with an editorial note that poisons the well, so to speak. From there, it's a positive feedback loop since comments, like objects, once in motion tend to stay in motion, and users gladly vote them in whichever direction they're already going. Not malicious, but also not healthy for the community as a whole when linking to the area occurs. The line tends to be VERY blurry here, for obvious reasons.
Then you have the rarities of groups like the [now defunct] Circlejerkers from Reddit (not to be confused with the circlejerk subreddit), which actively worked towards goals to manipulate parts of Reddit, whether through brigading or other means. These groups that employ group downvoting are very clearly brigading.
Back to the quasi-organized groups, though. Some groups clearly have an agenda, which presents a problem when they employ a meta link. On Reddit it used to be Mensrights (the MRA's) that would swoop in and destroy not just threads, but entire subs because they didn't agree with them. It's hard to argue that it wasn't somewhat organized (or at the very least, a mob waiting for the inquisitor of the day to lead their witch hunt) since it happened so frequently and consistently with that specific user group. People used to actively be afraid to say things for fear of a nuclear downvote. People complain about SJW's now, but man, back in the day no one could stand up to the MRA's on Reddit. The tide slowly turned as SRS gained momentum, and then the MRA's were on the receiving end of sudden attention influxes. The difference between them being that SRS was a meta sub, so EVERYTHING they did by nature was a brigade. One could even argue that it was very much their agenda to quash speech that went against their doctrine.
Providing we both agree that there is a clear and present issue with these situations, the question is then raised, what are we going to do about it? What can we do about it?
Some of the mitigations implemented:
The no participation system i.e. the np.reddit.com prefix. If you aren't already familiar, it and some subs implementing a screenshot only rule i.e. no direct links to the thread. This was circumvented as easily as one turns a light on and off, but it did serve as a gentle reminder to not impulsively insert oneself into the situation. It also let everyone pat themselves on the back for a job well-done since no one got their hands dirty :p.
The no cross-posting rule i.e. no direct links to anything else on the site itself (meta). People were to instead post a screenshot, or a copy paste of the thread in question. This prevented people from buffet-eating their meta pulp, so to speak, since they couldn't just walk over and swipe some of it onto their plate, but would have to go looking for it if they wanted to insert themselves into the situation.
To answer your question, though, "yes and no." If your downvote is prevented by direct, forceful, or obfuscated measures, then yes it absolutely is. If you are encouraged or guided in being a good citizen through transparent methods that you may still overcome (albeit with more time investment), thus still giving you a choice, then no, it is not. And if someone tries to bypass the latter by, say, providing a direct link in the comments of a post (thus going against policy) so that everyone can get to the meta-buffet again, then they are not acting in good-faith, and it merits intervention (eg moderation).
Does that make sense and clarify the concern about brigading?

You're asserting as fact things that have no evidence to support them. Admins have stated that they DO shadowban brigaders from SRS regularly. But they also have said SRS subscribers brigade at a much lesser frequency than almost all other meta subreddits. This is why /r/niggers was banned and why SRS has not been banned.
I made a single comment in SRS YEARS ago and was banned. I know lumping me in with a hated group makes it easier to dismiss me, but please just address my points.

But you won't be able to read them there either.
Combative_Douche ago
The only example of that anyone has been able to show me doesn't seem to have any evidence supporting the accusation that reddit admins shadowbanned people or banned subreddits simply because of ideological differences. It seems MUCH more likely that the bannings happened because rules were broken, such as vote manipulation, brigading, and witch-hunting.
Exactly. So why's everyone so upset with reddit?
MeHappy ago
I see you are using "The frontpage of the Universe" on Facebook. Is that a phrase you plan on using as Voat's title? I feel like that is a jab at Reddit, as well as a potential IP-infringement suit.
Odysses ago
What's the backend language/stack used to develop voat? Is it a copy of reddit's code? Or was it developed from the ground up?
Also, will it be open sourced?
absurdlyobfuscated ago
People need to understand that bad things being allowed to exist is the price of not having overmoderation and all sorts of other bad things that reddit does. We choose the subverses we subscribe to, we can endorse or condone content that is good or bad by voting, and we are never forced to look at anything we don't want to when we can just click away or unsubscribe. It strikes me as a rather immature way of dealing with the world, where people just want the grownups to get rid of the stuff they don't like.
MattDamon ago
Looking good so far, keep up the good work!
SirFarticus ago
Will you do anything to prevent users from getting 200 plus subverses to mod on? That is pretty bad on Reddit, with certain users modding 200 plus subreddits

We are discussing developing our own image hosting service which would be fully integrated into voat. This would be a large undertaking but I would love to see it happen. Who knows. If voat grows big enough and we can afford to have developers work on it, it may actually happen.

Another way of help would be the writing of a Wikipedia article or to help get us into media. If you (or any other interested person) can help us with that, please let us know by PM!
Soon, we will also accept donations and launch a Kickstarter campaign :)
whiteguy88 ago
First question, how are you receiving donations right now? I don't think you have something like reddit gold right now.
Second question, how are you planning to avoid abuse form the mods of the subverses? Ideally content should be deleted only if it is spam, or illegal, or has no connection with the subverse. However, on reddit, subreddits are mostly censored because the big subreddits come up with several dozens of rules. So even if a topic is popular, sometimes it just gets deleted because of ridiculous reasons, title not named correctly, source not approved, triggering content, etc.
Atko ago
We used to take paypal and bitcoin donations, but right now we are not actually receiving any donations in any way. We are students and our bank accounts are pretty dusty so I totally see your point. We may start a kickstarter or start selling voat t-shirts.
As for your second question: we have a no-meddling policy, if you create a sub and make up your own rules - who are we to tell you what to do as long as what you do is legal in Switzerland?
To combat obvious mod abuse, we'll need to invent a better solution than what we have right now. Sets layout is one way to approach this and there are rumors that we will also use hashtags :) Please send your ideas to /v/ideasforvoat as we'd love to hear them and we can discuss them there in more detail.
I hope this answers your question.
tabularassa ago
Why did you guys stop receiving donations?
You should at least publish your bitcoin address for people to show support. You guys are doing such a good job I feel like I need to buy you a beer (if you are worried about people seeing how much money you have received, you can auto-generate a new bitcoin address periodically)

There should be no major changes to default stylesheets as far as I'm aware. They were designed by @nurdoidz and he's being very careful not to break things for users who stylized their subs. He also released several other themes which could be a good starting point if you plan to style your own sub.
Yes. This feature is quite challenging and it will take some time to do. I'm hoping I get some help from @puttitout on this one actually because my #1 priority right now is the sets layout.
Beside the automod, there isn't much in the backlog that I am aware of. Feel free to jump in /v/ideasforvoat and tell us what you think should be implemented. Thanks!

Combative_Douche ago
What you linked to was a whole lot of crazy gibberish that basically said a sub was deleted by admins with no explanation given.
You're assuming it wasn't deleted for many of the valid reasons admins often remove things. Likely vote manipulation or some pitchforking and harassment going on. Sure, I'm all for more transparency, but you're jumping straight to censorship when there isn't any strong evidence of it in that situation.
proverse ago
What's the good word?

Getting away from SJW and Reddit, I have a question for you guys:
The community is still small, and many things are changing daily. I signed up when the website was still woahverse, and already I can see a large change. How do you guys plan to help maintain the growth of the site without losing quality as more trolls and people that desire to watch the world burn discover and start wreaking havok?
Combative_Douche ago
I've only ever seen reddit admins delete cp, dox, ads, witch-hunts, and harassment. Whenever people complained about censorship, they were talking about stuff MODs deleted or banned, not admins.
Also, it seems like voat goes even further with censoring deleted submissions than reddit does. When you go to a deleted submission on voat, the title is still visible, but the actual submitted link is replaced with one that goes to the voat homepage.

Combative_Douche ago
So voat isn't for me unless I'm into cp, dox, ads, witch-hunts, and/or harassment?
motherfucker ago
Since most organizations are defining harassment as "someone disagrees with me and hurts my fee-fees", yeah, I'm not bothered by it.
FFS, the twats on twitter managed to redefine polite disagreement as a form of harassment ("sea-lioning"), and are using that as a talking point in how turrible harassment is on Twitter.
So the problem is that if you buy into the modern narrative of "harassment" as "something that upsets me", yeah, you're going to have a bad time if you're upset by people publicly disagreeing with you.
decoupler ago
This kind of definition drift really shits me. They've made the word almost meaningless, yet they expect people to react as if people are throwing eggs at them every time they step outside.
And whenever someone criticizes this, the definition suddenly springs back to the original one and they're obviously just a misogynist who wants to attack women.
Combative_Douche ago
By harassment, I'm referring more specifically to things like threats and stalking.
Combative_Douche ago
So if I don't like those things, voat isn't for me? Will I be censored if I speak against those things?

For now the team is just me and @zook with quite a lot of help from @nurdoidz, @puttitout and @danielflamino. They voluntarily helped so much that I now actually consider them to be a part of the team as well.
Me and zook are students in our final BSc year (we both graduate in about 5 months). I am studying design of information systems at Lund University in Sweden and zook is economics at University of Zurich, Switzerland. At first, voat was my student side project, something to help me better understand asp.net mvc 5 and c# and boy did I learn a lot. I bought a stack of books and started to implement feature by feature.
At some point, people discovered voat and started to use it. Fast forward 1.5 years later and here we are, wondering what the heck happened...

What are differences in laws bewteen USA and Switzerland in terms of freedom of speech . USA has basicaly absolute freedom of speech, is it the same in Switzerland or are there any restrictions you are obligated to enforce (i.e. hate speech, holocaust denying etc...)
razuliserm ago
We do practice Freedom of speech with only a few limitations. We like to call it freedom of opinion though.
>Switzerland
>The Swiss Constitution also guarantees Freedom of speech and Freedom of information for every citizen.
But still the country makes some controversial decisions, which both Human Right Organizations and other states criticizes.
>The Swiss animal rights organization "Verein gegen Tierfabriken Schweiz" took the country to the European Court of Human Rights twice for censoring a TV ad of the organization, in which the livestock farming of pigs is shown. The organization won both lawsuits, and the Swiss state was convicted to pay compensations.
>Another very controversial law of Switzerland is that persons who refuse to recognize the Armenian Genocide of 1915 have to face trial. The Turkish politician Doğu Perinçek was fined CHF 12,000 for denying the genocide in 2007. Switzerland was criticized by Turkish media and Turkish politicians for acting against the freedom of opinion. Perinçek's application for a revision was rejected by the court. Holocaust denial is also illegal. Source

Yes, the topic of hate speech needs to be addressed directly. Hate speech is a made up term that can be pretty much cover anything and used for any reason.

Moderation at a local level, not federal level. If it's not for you, find a different site. If you don't understand, find a different site man

First of all thank you for valuing freedom of speech and choosing that as such a centeral aspect of your site but I have a question pretty relevant to that. What are your stances on the following:
Doxxing of a user A by user B. It could be argued that it is user B's freedom of speech to yell out those specific pieces of information about user A however it could also be argued that person A is in actual danger from the information leak. What would you do?
Another instance of "The Fappening". Those pictures were not only private pictures that were leaked but private pictures of actors who have gone to great lengths to trademark their image and likeness. They will most likely issue DMCA takedown requests to you and if not you then your server host. What will you do?
Piracy. It is illegal by US law (to my understanding) and I am assuming voat is a US based company and at least hosted on US based servers. What will you do?
Hate speech / Harassment / stalking / etc.
Essentially I am trying to gauge the length that the admins will go to, to defend their stance on "freedom of speech". and its different interpretations by different people, through asking a few difficult questions. Thank you for your work, effort, and time.
Edit: Bonus question: What are you willing to do in regards to child pornography? (such as what will eventually happen at /v/jailbait)

I can answer some of those things.
>Piracy. It is illegal by US law (to my understanding) and I am assuming voat is a US based company and at least hosted on US based servers. What will you do?
Atko currently lives in Sweden but is planning to move to his GF in Switzerland where I'm sure he's going to try to establish this thing.
Pirating is legal in Switzerland as long as you don't distribute, meaning you can pirate for private use.
>Hate speech / Harassment / stalking / etc.
Switzerland practices freedom of speech/opinion to this extend:
Source

Thank you for this question.
We have taken note of it and will write an official FAQ-like section which covers everything you wanted to know here. This is a frequent question and we'll definitely address it but we'll need to consult our Swiss lawyers before making any blind statements.

So the only difference is that CP, dox, advertising, witch-hunting, and harassment will be allowed by voat admins?
Why's everyone so excited about that?
Shazam_ ago
I guess when you don't know anything about the censorship that happens on reddit, it may seem that way.
Combative_Douche ago
I've only ever seen reddit admins delete cp, dox, ads, witch-hunts, and harassment. Whenever people complained about censorship, they were talking about stuff MODs deleted or banned, not admins.
Shazam_ ago
I have seen numerous power tripping mods and admins delete far more than they should be because they want to control the conversation

I don't see why anyone would be excited about that.
Atko ago
Sorry about the captcha. It will go away after a while (our server is suspicious about new users) but we definitely need a better solution. I hate captchas as much as you do.
Atko ago
I approached the developer of redreader to see if he would be interested to join our team. We are looking into this and trying to recruit a talented dev for Android and one more for iOS and believe me, nobody would be happier than me if there was a Voat Android app :)
tomzorz ago
I'd be happy to help with the Windows Phone app :)
Combative_Douche ago
Isn't the entire point of voat that people wanted to escape the censorship on reddit? How can they ensure that if mods can still delete stuff they don't like? I just don't see how this is going to be any different than reddit.
WillyWonka ago
Actually, you could make a new community and stay free of those moderators. while in reddit you'll have to deal with the admins removing you from your newly created community and handing it to a bunch of SJW.
mintbanana ago
Banning one user for ban evasion over past sitewide rule violations, and allowing all subreddits with no active accounts moderating it (including shadowbanned ones) to be petitioned for takeover. The system isn't administrated completely neutrally like it is here, but if your point is strong enough, its strong enough to stand without propping it up with bullshit and spin?
"Fucking admins handing muh reddits to SRS, HURRRRRRRRRRRRR". Its possible to relate what seems like a pretty unjust event, without such exaggeration.
Teh_Sauce_Guy ago
The difference is that reddit kicked out real mods and installed the mods that were censoring said content. Whoave- Sorry, Voat also installed mods into a lot of subverses, but I'm quite certain that if any of us step out of line we will absolutely have our positions of power revoked.
mintbanana ago
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof. Source?
Teh_Sauce_Guy ago
Sure, I read a thread where mass shadowbanning was happening over the gamergate controversy. I'd find you the thread but it's been deleted from reddit (making it somewhat harder to find) and I'm going to bed now. It's 0009 already.
mintbanana ago
Umm, while that event was a mess, and a lot of people got shadowbanned for dox/etc who did not deserve it, it was a stampede of people and i guess mistakes are easier to make.
But this event is a bait and switch from you. I asked you for evidence of one thing, and you pointed at evidence of something completely different, in every way.
Come on.
Teh_Sauce_Guy ago
Oh shit right mod installation. Somehow during my thought process I got to admin corruption. I suppose I don't have any direct proof since that admins keep everything hushed down and would likely have just given control of the mod accounts to someone else (not kicking out accounts, just the people in control).
I will find proof for you though, but for now I seriously do need to go to sleep.
mintbanana ago
Reply to this tomorrow and we'll take it back up again.

Too right mate. I decided to spend just a second doing a quick search and found this: http://wiki.gamergate.me/index.php?title=Reddit#Censorship_of_allegations_of_video_game_industry_corruption

mintbanana ago
Is this comment deleted? Drilling down i see its this video thats the source. But weren't we talking about "mod installation" not shadowbanning? Im so confused right now :(
Combative_Douche ago
Source? I still don't see how any of this is different than reddit.
Teh_Sauce_Guy ago
Source is I mod a main sub. If I try to censor anything I'll get kicked out.
Combative_Douche ago
Your source is that you think it would happen? Huh?
Dick-Tracy ago
If you don't like a moderator's policies, you need to exercise your rights:
Ultimately, moderators need to have control over their subverses to help keep things on topic. If you don't like it, the solution is to move on; why do you think we're all here? There's no long-term solution for the issue other than having the Cool People continually move on to places where they're able to be be cool.
Combative_Douche ago
How is that any different than on reddit?
pzer0 ago
A solution would be for voat admins to take an opposite approach to that of the hands-off attitude of reddit admins. There should be public moderation logs of all subreddits, and if a moderator is abusing mod power the admins should step in and remove him/her.
Dick-Tracy ago
It's not, nor was Reddit different from anywhere else except for the novel ability for normal users to make their own subreddits without approval.
There's no good solution to this - at least, not in the twenty-odd years of the Web.
Combative_Douche ago
So what's the point of voat?
soylent_absinthe ago
At this point, the admins not kowtowing to anyone who believes that content that is not expressly illegal - such as child pornography - should be removed would be a huge difference from reddit.
Look, I get what you're saying, but I also think that reddit is trending downward. I jumped to reddit from digg, and to digg from the now-defunct Yahoo message boards, and to there from AOL groups. In the last 15 years, plenty of large discussion mediums have come and gone, and this will be no different. Each of these was pretty good in the beginning, but as ranks start to swell, minor issues become major problems. If you assume 5% of people will be useless shitheads like SRS etc, that starts to become quite the population when you have 159 million visitors. All of the sudden, you have 7 million shitheads in a cacophony shouting down opinions they want censored or stirring up trouble in the form of doxxing or brigading. It's just the cycle of things, I guess.

goodboy ago
Or better yet, never delete anything at all and instead let votes do the talking on all subs.
tradesbadelynge ago
While we all love free speech, there are some subreddits that are still good because of strict ruling.
Look at the r/gaming or r/funny or /pics. Everyone hates them because of crappy content and you need rules to enforce good content.
There needs to be a balance.
Nurdoidz ago
This isn't viable if some of the comments link to illegal content (such as child pornography).
Trestkie ago
Maybe add the NSFW feature like in Reddit for every thread?
Teh_Sauce_Guy ago
Plus the fact that fucking shit floats and gold sinks, and that using voted systems like reddit has means you'll have people worshiping Niel "Smoke De Grass" Tyson and completely crucifying anyone who disagrees at all or tries to bring up any bad things he's done.
Reddit has an extremely toxic community anywhere that isn't heavily (and properly) moderated.
Combative_Douche ago
But so many people are here because they loathe ANY moderation.
goodboy ago
So... make the rule no deleting anything except child porn. Child porn should be the one exception that proves the rule. All other content should have a "Go Fuck Yourself" rule.
Trestkie ago
And maybe add the NSFW feature like in Reddit for every thread?
Combative_Douche ago
Yeah, that's what I thought the entire point of Voat was. Without it, how is it any different from reddit?

Atko ago
I am seriously considering getting a cat. My fav icecream is probably creme brulee flavor and @zook likes stracciatella.
tylr ago
Hey guys,
I think it is fantastic that you guys are creating an alternative here.
One feature that I think should be obligatory is that no posts, except those with illegal content, can ever be permanently deleted. There should be a repository in every subverse that shows every moderated post and comment.
This is a feature that the Indymedia sites used to use to maintain moderator transparency, which is the biggest problem at "similar sites".
Combative_Douche ago
Yeah, I could do that. Or I could just post it on reddit where it probably won't be deleted. I just fail to see what the point of voat is and how it's different from reddit.
The whole anti-censorship thing is really starting to look like it's just simply pro-censorship anti-SJW.
Combative_Douche ago
It's true though. I've had several posts deleted.
If mods have the same powers here as on reddit, what's the point? If voat was started to escape the censorship on reddit, how is it going to do this if mods can still delete stuff they don't like?
nicethingyoucanthave ago
I kind of agree. Maybe mods should only be able to outright delete posts that break site-wide rules (like doxing posts for example). Otherwise, maybe mods should only be able to "super downvote" a post.
If the point of a mod is simply to keep the community on-topic, then a super-downvote should be sufficient. People who don't want to see spam and the link don't have to, but people who want to check up on the mods could still do so.
There are often times on reddit where entire threads turn into a comment graveyard and nobody knows why. It'd be nice if, instead of those posting having been deleted, they'd simply been downvoted to oblivion, but I could still see them. If the mods are actually doing a good job, then each time I look I'd go, "wow the mods are great!" but the mods couldn't get away with actual censorship of ideas they don't like.
Teh_Sauce_Guy ago
Except that superdownvotes aren't enough - what about doxxing or illegal content? We can't force the Voat admins to do all that cleanup. The whole reason mods exist is because the Voat admins can't do everything
And what about a polandball-like subreddit, with strictly enforced rules? "Please fix and resubmit" would no longer work because people would still see the super-downvoted post and just upvote it right back to the main page, where we would end up having rulebreaking comics?
And then there's stuff like "censoring" other stuff - not ideas, but like let's say I wanted to keep something secret - but not a secret that the sub's users need to know about. I admit this isn't really a good point but let's say somehow someone found out about my school. I wouldn't want them talking about it all over my sub, at the very least. Then there would be many people asking in one of my subs "hey bruh school u go to" which superdownvotes wouldn't be able to counter because suddenly everyone wants to know so suddenly everyone upvotes it. It'd be off topic and unwanted. I mean I guess this could be an extension to doxxing in my first point - except that asking me where I go to and saying where I go two different things - ones doxxing and one's not.
Also nonsense content like "lolol warlizard gaming forumz amirite" which everyone seems to love to upvote on principle.
Back to polandball, memes are banned there too, but hiveminds be hiveminds and superdownvotes aren't going to fix that.
nicethingyoucanthave ago
??? did you miss where I specifically mentioned site-wide rules and actually used "doxing" as my example???
A "super downvote" works for everything else - for all of the examples you gave. In poland ball or whatever, the super downvote works just fine.
WillyWonka ago
This should be the only exception, and there should be an open log of activities of each moderator, who was banned by who, why and when, what was removed and why. Except illegal content, which should be visible as "Deleted because illegal content".
That way users can inquiry if a mod has way too much of this hidden activities.
About the people voting up so much that it makes the front, it should be anyway keep hidden (requiring a click to see it for example), and probably not even let it float, the important point is, it always should be accessible no matter what kind of non-illegal crap it is, but never taking over the "expected" content, and that's possible.
About the users secrets, that's something that's needed to be determined if it's illegal or not. If it's not well, rough luck. Else, It'll go to the log of shadowy/hidden activity of a mod. People will inquiry if necessary.
Teh_Sauce_Guy ago
If it stays buried at the bottom then it's fine. I'm kind of uncomfortable with no deletes but this will probably work.
WillyWonka ago
Completely agree with this idea, it should be a superdownvote button but things still visible to anyone wanting to look at those comments.
The comment graveyard should be a thing of the past.
Teh_Sauce_Guy ago
Coment graveyards refer to huge groups of buried comments because of either brigading or genuinely bad content that somehow the users of the subreddit managed to identify and downvote instead of upvoting like they normally do.
Combative_Douche ago
Exactly. That is what I had hoped voat would be. But it turns out it's just a sparsely populated reddit clone.
Teh_Sauce_Guy ago
No it isn't. There are a fair amount of differences, the biggest difference being that users get paid for good content (which is coming soon). Just because it uses the same comment tree system and has upvotes that doesn't make it a reddit clone.
Combative_Douche ago
Dude... the money thing (if it ever happens) is pretty much the most DESPERATE thing a website can do. You're in the company of Bing.
Teh_Sauce_Guy ago
Yeah youtube is such a pathetic, unsuccessful, desperate website, the only way they convince people to even go there is paying them. That's totally the full story.
hey guys get a load of this shill
Combative_Douche ago
Huh? Are you confused about how YouTube works? Advertisers pay people for showing their ads.
Sometimes advertisers pay video makers to mention or feature (or shill) their products. That's what shill means. That's the literal definition of shill.
Teh_Sauce_Guy ago
Voat is going to pay users from ad revenue. God how stupid are you?
Combative_Douche ago
Do you always let stupid people upset you so much?
Asp ago
Moderators have the same powers pretty much anywhere else too. Even 8chan. As they should in my opinion. Difference here is that the site owners won't delete anything unless it explicitly breaks any laws. So in essence, everybody is able to make their own subverse and not worry if their speech will be censored there.
I don't really know how else would communities for specific subjects work on the internet, if moderators wouldn't have the powers to, well, moderate. Then again, I'm no expert.
Combative_Douche ago
I know, I just don't see how voat can differentiate itself from reddit then. I mean, pretty much ALL censorship on reddit was done by moderators. Admins deleted illegal shit and spam. Hardly censorship.
Teh_Sauce_Guy ago
The mods were administrative puppets -- and also that's not true, some threads with mass deletions also have mass shadowbanning.
Combative_Douche ago
Source?
The only shadowbanning that I've seen has been in relation to vote manipulation and brigading. Well, that plus illegal stuff.
Teh_Sauce_Guy ago
If you at all commented in some of the gamergate threads in /r/gaming you would be shadowbanned. I don't have a source on me now besides actually reading the threads where the drama happened but if I'm not feeling lazy I'll go and get one later.
Combative_Douche ago
Oh, you mean where people were doxxing and witch-hunting? If the mods weren't deleting that shit, it's good they were replaced.
Asp ago
I suppose that is a valid criticism. To be honest, I don't know the extent on how much the Reddit admins did or did not intervene in the subreddit moderation.
Personally, I'm here just for the smaller and a bit less circlejerky userbase. The people here seem cool.
Combative_Douche ago
It really seems the same here. The only difference is people are jerking it in the opposite direction.
Teh_Sauce_Guy ago
You joined a few days too late. This place is feeling slightly toxic to me now, and wasn't like that before that random 2nd mass exodus.
Combative_Douche ago

Combative_Douche ago
I agree. However, isn't the entire point of voat that people wanted to escape the censorship on reddit? How can they ensure that if mods can still delete stuff they don't like? I just don't see how this is going to be any different than reddit.
cointelpro_shill ago
If someone creates a sub, they have the right to ruin it by deleting relevant posts like yours. Voat isn't going to have the problem of being the 9th most popular site in the US. So censorship of "mainstream" subs, which would be a concern, is a bridge we won't come to for a while. Given the seeding of this community, I'm sure any censorship is going to be made a big deal out of, possibly early enough to nip it in the bud.
Combative_Douche ago
So mods of large subverses are not allowed to censor, while mods of smaller subs are? Where's the line?
cointelpro_shill ago
They should all be allowed to moderate, but the moderation log should be public as far as post removals go. The only concern then would be apathetic users not caring if a mod is censoring unfairly. But like I said, with the nature of this migration (if that is what is happening), it's likely that censorship is going to be a primary concern among the community.
We may also have a better chance of creating alternatives to the 'defaults' if their mods do go bad. We have the advantage of not being co-opted by Imgur and other social media sites, so our main subs aren't going to be inflated by non-community members who only vote on dumb pics.
Combative_Douche ago
The only differences you mention have more to do with userbase size than anything else.
cointelpro_shill ago
Getting affiliated with other media sites would be a problem independent of the number of users here
Combative_Douche ago
Valid point. I personally don't see that as a very big issue. Sure, it's caused a few problems at reddit in the past, but it seems like it's always been dealt with in an okay way. I don't know if it's really related to censorship though.

Thanks for creating the place, so many of us from reddit have been looking for a place to leave to for ages.
How do plan on ensuring that SJW's don't fuck this place up too ?
What administrative polices will be in place to ensure your admins aren't selectively enforcing the rules ? The biggest problem on reddit is that SRS has the implicit and explicit backing of the Admin and senior management team, which has allowed them to run riot.
How can you protect against that ?

Is voat anti-censorship? Many of my posts keep being deleted.
Hokuto_Seikun ago
You've said this multiple times in this thread, and it has already been answered. The mods of whatever subverse you posted in deleted your post, the admins had nothing to do this. The censorship most people here are talking about is the admins censoring the subs themselves, effectively erasing any possible discussion on a topic.
Combative_Douche ago
So how is this any different than reddit? On reddit, admins only get involved when mods neglect to delete illegal stuff, dox, and witch-hunts. Is the only difference between reddit and voat that admins here allow that? If so, voat's admins are likely going to run into legal issues down the line.
Hokuto_Seikun ago
That would be find if that was all they were doing, but it appears that the admins at reddit are doing more than that. A couple threads discussing it can be found Here, and Here
Edit: fixed link
Combative_Douche ago
Neither of those show actual evidence of anything. There's a baseless accusation that that comment got a subreddit and the commenter banned. But there's absolutely no reason to believe that. Sure, I agree admins should have more transparency (explain shadowbans publically), but a lack of an explanation doesn't mean people can just make up the reasons.
For all we know the subreddit was being used for illegal purposes. At the very least, it's likely it was for vote manipulation and brigading. But saying it was banned because of that comment is ridiculous.
Hokuto_Seikun ago
The the /u/meanwhileonreddit thread, someone posted an interview with a former mod that was pretty enlightening. Here is the inverview, and Here is the original post.)

What do you think will be the spark to get a majority of redditors to move to voat? Would this would be something the community here might want since it would be bring traffic but the cancer? Would it just start things all over again?
Nurdoidz ago
As one member of the community who's been here for eight months, it is my opinion that a major migration to voat is something I would hate. Yes, it would make this place popular, but Reddit has a culture that I didn't like, so I came here. Up until this point, voat and Reddit have really different cultures, but, with a major migration from a site like Reddit, I can only see the entire culture just changing sites. I like it around here, at the moment. I'd hate to see our fun little community be washed out by another site.
Slug ago
I'm in the same boat as you, Nurdoiz. A major migration would probably force me off of Voat, as I really, really liked the small, unique community. Already, I feel as if the recent spike in activity is changing the atmosphere of Voat in ways I don't particularly like.

dobodob ago
honestly, these types of usernames back on reddit were milked so much by users that seemingly wanted to stand out as excessively showy or bold in order to garner more attention/karma. and seeing it so often got old and rather annoying
tomzorz ago
The current API is read-only, so first we'll need an update to that to enable voting/submitting. Until then you could develop a "read-only" app though.
veezus ago
On the About page for Voat, there are two areas of improvement that you see over "the other guys": more openness and better usability / features.
What areas of improvement are most important to you, and what kind of development roadmap do you have for the next year?
Trey ago
What motivated the creation of Voat?
Atko ago
I took a class about c# at Lund University and I figured I should try to learn more about it in a more practical way. Then I discovered asp.net, created a crappy voat version and discarded it, started learning asp.net mvc5 and almost 2 years later, here we are. However, my initial plan was to only make a simple prototype and test things out. I never intended to go this far. I was really angry when I realized that a single mod on reddit moderates all major default subs (when tesla keyword censorship started happening) and figured it was time to do something about it. Then more and more people started to look for alternatives and here we are today. Every time something happens at reddit, voat gets a spike. Some people go back to reddit, some stay. All in all it's a general upward curve and I hope everything works out for the best.
Trey ago
I really enjoy your "go with the community flow" mindset. It's fresh to see a reset button to the concept of Reddit and some updates to the general model. I hope that this site grows continuously! If you don't mind me asking, which mod?
WesQ ago
Do you guys think the voting system is detrimental to the overall sites health? I think that brigading and and envy for internet karma really set Reddit back. Unidan is good example of its abuse and the voting system is directly responsible for it. The only way I see it being able to survive is to make sure everyone maintains one and only one account. Which is probably impossible. Do you guys plan on looking into this?
dis_is_my_account ago
Do you have any plans to get others known about voat like advertizing? It was lucky that you got the influx today but I can't see it happening at this rate in the future and I think it's necessary to start showing more people that voat exists.

Furthermore, a kickstarter campaign is planned :)
alloydgd ago
Hello,
Firstly I would like to thank you for creating Voat I have only been here a few days but I have already feel more at home here than I ever did at Reddit so far I have been able to openly discuss and post things without fear of insta-deletion and massive downvotes plus I really like the features here the @ and auto linkage of subverses and gif in threads are very nice and I love the colour scheme and logo its easier on the eye.
I suppose the burning question for most newcomers is what are the proposed different solutions or measures to avoid Voat becoming exactly like Reddit once the userbase grows, and what will be done to stop or sanction power mad and unfair moderators that may crop up on here?
With that in mind so far my experiences here have been positive and there is a real feeling of community which presently I think users really need right now! Great job on it so far especially with the promise of partnering through paid content creation on the horizon. I think Voat has really taken some good strides in the right direction and hopefully we all can continue to work together to improve it! :)
Bonus Question: Charmander, Bulbasaur or Squirtle?
phenomenaldouche ago
Can anyone explain how anything about voat will stop the same feminist loons from just taking over everything here the same way they have on reddit?
Combative_Douche ago
Censorship. I'm a feminist and have had many of my posts deleted.
phenomenaldouche ago
I'm a feminist too, of the old fashioned "all people should be treated equally" variety, not of the new school "PIV is rape", "consent can be retroactively removed", "we were both drunk but he's the rapist", SJW-wacktardery.
Censorship by a mod, on their sub (i.e. a safe space for their fee fees where there are no freeze peaches) is IMO idiotic but acceptable. If those people want an echo chamber instead of a rational discussion, let them have it (e.g. SRS on reddit).
Censorship on a general basis by admins (e.g. mass shadowbanning of users that don't agree with the prevailing groupthink, selective banning of subs like "FPH has to go but SRS is fine") is a different animal. In that case you'll end up marching towards a place that spits on the very idea of free speech, like reddit.
Slug ago
You've had your posts deleted on Voat?
Combative_Douche ago
Yes.
Example: https://voat.co/v/AgainstMensRights/comments/42066
Slug ago
Seems like it was deleted by the subverse moderator, not the admins. That problem lies with the moderator themselves, not Voat as a whole. Also, it looks like the deleted link now routes to the Voat home page. What was it beforehand? Maybe it broke the subverse rules somehow.
Combative_Douche ago
Nah, when stuff gets deleted here, the link gets changed to voat's homepage. Kinda censor-ish in itself.
And yeah, mods can delete stuff they don't like, just like on reddit. So that's what I don't understand. How is voat any more anti-censorship than reddit? If mods have the same powers, how is it not just going to be the same?
Slug ago
If I remember correctly from another thread, the admins are going to be working on a transparency tool for the moderation of subverses, so the users can tell if something fishy is going on.
Since the site is still in it's infancy, we might have to wait a while for that feature.
Combative_Douche ago
For a site that's entire point is to escape censorship, you'd think something like that would have been higher on their priority list. Like maybe it should have been developed before they opened.

How do you plan on competing with reddit, or do you plan on competing at all?
Alternatively, what do you want to do better here than reddit does?

I want to address I concern I have on places like 4chan/reddit/etc. While I think we all agree that there shouldn't be censorship which is obviously occurring over at reddit and 4chan, I have a real problem with people creating subs similar to r/picsofdeadkids r/jailbait r/sexwithanimals etc. I certainly embrace anyone to say what they want, no matter how offensive but I think allowing certain subs to exist is detrimental to this site. Free speech and open discussion should be encouraged but I would love to see some sort of site-wide voting system to determine if a sub violates a certain "code of ethnics" As long as it's not illegal it's allowed is a nice thing to say, but illegal is a slippery slope. Illegal where? Switzerland? the US, anywhere in the world, if it's illegal it's out? what if it's legal in the states and not in the UK, do we default to it being legal?
I ask this because I really have a problem with a lot of the shit on reddit and I find it increasingly hard to support a site that feels it's OK post pics of people having sex with animals but you can't talk about gamergate. That right there is some fucked up logic.
Thanks for making this site.
edit: to remove the hyperlinks to the subs i mentioned.
shrike ago
I disagree wholeheartedly with this line of thinking. This is how open discourse on reddit degenerated to the sorry state it's in now. In the examples you mentioned, morality may be clear cut, but where do you draw the line on other less obvious issues? What's considered acceptable to you may not be to others. Who decides what is acceptable at the end of the day? You suggested a majority vote, but who's to say the minority's idea of what's acceptable is any less valid? The bottom line is that systems like this break down the second moral relativism comes into play.
You're right, some communities that may form here are disgusting and widely considered immoral, but the fact that they are allowed to exist here does not in any way imply that the site as a whole, it's creators, or its entire userbase condones or supports such things. The second we start placing arbitrary restrictions on open discussion is the second we pave the way for any one group or way of thought to appropriate these rules for the furthering of their own agenda, allowing them to shape the narrative in any way they see fit, regardless of the validity of opposing viewpoints. This is exactly what happened on reddit, and the main reason I'm here.
Atko ago
We will not censor anything as long as it is legal in Switzerland. I am sorry if I am repeating my self but censorship is a slippery slope and I don't feel like we should be deciding what is moral and what isn't. We have governments to do that for us and they are the ones who make the law.

This is important to address. SJWs and SRS go way overboard with censorship, but let's remember that those movements were originally backlash against people being serious, serious dicks.
Moderation is a tricky game. It requires careful thought and balance. I want to know Voat's mod plan for when the community begins to scale.

Hi there! Thanks for the site. Questions: what are your short term/long term plans for monetization, if there are any at all? If this influx continues, maintaining the servers might not be cheap.
Atko ago
Hi! Short term plans - loan money from friends and relatives, keep chasing after investors which agree with our views. Long term - sell ad space to non-evil companies and share ad revenue with users. For example, if you submit something that others find interesting and suddenly you get hundreds of replies and thousands of views, our ads would also display next to your post and you would get a cut of ad-revenue made on your submission. I hope this answers your question.
katara ago
Sounds like a decent plan. Thanks! Might I suggest a system similar to the gold gifting system that exists on Reddit? In the beginning, the reward could be something as small as a little ticker on the user's profile counting gold or whatever you call it. You could expand it to serve a broader purpose in the future if you wanted.
The idea is that implementing this is a vaguely one-time cost in terms of dev time, and even if it's used rarely, it's one of those things that can continue to bring in potential revenue far into the future. :)
theresamouseinmyhous ago
What's your long term vision for the site?
zook ago
Not sell out to anybody and make it a perfect platform to discuss and share freely.
Also, we want to have a meritocratic system in place where people that add value to the site are not only rewarded with their audience, but also with a share of the ad revenue, see our partner program.
Tehevilone ago
Are you guys going to be taking any action against witch-hunting groups that have caused huge problems in the past for Reddit?
VisualCyan ago
Hey, thanks for creating an alternative, it's nice to see different ways things can be run. I was a long time lurker on Reddit, and enjoyed the intellectual and interesting articles and discussions when it first started out. However, I noticed that with an increasing population it seemed that comments that only contained terrible one line jokes or obscure meta-memes were often the ones to be seen at the top. I guess that's to be expected with the general population involved as we usually succumb to the lowest common denominator in form of entertainment but it would be nice to see some kind of intellectual discussion being encouraged and somewhat maintained - maybe a system that people can elect to be part of that would automatically filter out entire comment chains based on peoples tags.
Does Voat have any intention on censoring comments that are only jokes in serious posts? Or anything of this nature? I know it's kinda like making it a club for smart people, but being all inclusive has it's own problems too.
zook ago
We want to solve the problem of succumbing to the lowest common denominator by introducing a meritocratic system, where you get a share of the ad revenue of the site depending on how well your submissions/comments are received by the community. This will create a huge incentive to not go for the lowest common denominator and it just needs 1 person to do it in order for a quality comment to be the top rated one.
No, we do not want to make Voat a strictly exclusive club for any kind of group. We might pause the number of new users in order to avoid a disintegration of the site, but we do not want to make it a 'special place' for a 'special kind of people', that is what subs are there for ;)
Sazooki ago
Can you explain what you mean by this? The reason people go for the lazy content on Reddit is because it's easy and popular. People like dumb, effortless comments and memes that only take seconds to consume. I don't see how giving people money is going to change this; in fact, it'll make it significantly worse as instead of sitting on the site all day as a power user and posting as much lazy content as possible just for karma, you'll be doing it for money.
facepaint ago
I have always liked the slashdot system. Points for Intelligent, Insightful, Funny. Downvotes for troll, flame-bait & over-rated.
Not everyone has points to assign at all times. When you do get points, they are limited and you have a limited amount of time to use them. And you can either opt to vote in a given thread, or comment on it, but not both. If you comment, all of your votes are undone.
And how often you are selected to have voting points is partially based on quality and frequency of your participation. And there is a meta-moderation system to see how well people are voting.
Not perfect, but it does a fairly good job.
mommysaidabadword ago
slashdot was the best for this. Id love to see voat take a couple pages from their book.
zhaansgarden ago
I've been reading a lot of hype about why Voat is supposed to be superior to Reddit, but to me it really looks like an exact copy of Reddit. How is this site different? Also, what plans do you have in place to prevent the mods from becoming power-hungry, like on Reddit? I think a simple solution would be to allow all the members of a subverse the right to 'Voat' a mod's power away at any point. Or maybe you could upvote or downvote the mods like a post, and if a mod gets too many downvotes they're locked out. Would you guys ever consider implementing a system that gave the general population the power to select the moderators of their forums, instead of having each subverse run by it's own clique of users?
Edit: Spelling
zook ago
The main points distinguishing us from reddit right now are the following:
No-censorship policy. Anything that is legal, stays on the site. We are not going to consider individual opinions on this
The maximum of subs one can moderate is 10
The set feature (coming soon, see preview here
In the future (mid to end 2015), the partner program of Voat will change the game of how discussions on the internet work and we will operate in a completely new market.
casebash ago
How is the set feature different from multi-reddits?
Sazooki ago
What's to stop the site becoming run by a bunch of power hungry mods that delete anything they don't like, like they do with anti-SJW stuff on Reddit's /r/gaming, /r/games, /r/todayilearned etc? Just the limit of 10 subreddits? I don't think that's enough.
BananaPalmer ago
Seriously. How hard is it to create a second account? Oh look, now I can mod 20 subverses!
Iwakurasan ago
Is it 10 per user or per IP?
Nemesis ago
One problem with that is you could get a coordinated effort from members of one sub to move into a new sub and mass downvote the mods there. Hypothetical case: Anti vaxxer sub gets angry that /v/science won't allow any pseudoscience links, so they subscribe, take part in discussions for a few days, and then massively downvote any mod that speaks out against pseudoscience. Replace antivaxxers with political group X and /v/science with political group Y and you see the problem. My main account is a mod, so while I don't mind the idea of giving subs more input on who gets to mod, I also know that just about every person who gets a clearly inappropriate link removed gets pissy about it.
mommysaidabadword ago
Maybe hold a monthly thread to discuss. If the members of the sub feel weird or whatever and agree that a mod should go, then so be it.
hipst ago
Is your site hosted at a provider in Germany?
zook ago
Yes, for now it is. This might change in the future with increasing traffic.
ArchangelleRosechu ago
If I'm initially limited to 10 upvotes every 24 hours, I understand that you guys might have coded it as clicking the upvote arrow 10 times but is it really necessary that I not be allowed to undo my upvotes?
Atko ago
That looks like a bug. Resetting a vote should have an additional check to see if the vote was cast in the last 24 hours and return the vote into available pool. I'll write it down and open a github issue for it. Sorry you had to experience it.
Orangeandblack ago
I apologize if I missed it somewhere. What's the purpose of limiting up votes?
Nurdoidz ago
To add a barrier of difficulty/effort in abusing upvoats; in order to upvoat more, you need to build up your reputation a bit.
mintbanana ago
That said, its a pro circlejerk thing, you get downvoted you lose the power to vote.
ArchangelleRosechu ago
Thanks.
Asp ago
You are allowed to undo votes. Just click the arrow again. I'm not sure if that gives you back the used upvote for the daily quota though.
ArchangelleRosechu ago
Nope.
This is exactly what I did. Quota be damned, I just want it to allow me to undo my upvote.
Here's what happened:
Thanks for responding. What do I do? Something seems awry.
Asp ago
Oh, fair enough. That's how it works for me, so I guess that limitation disappears once you have an adequate amount of contribution points. I'm not sure if it is intended behaviour or not, seeing as the site is still practically in alpha testing.
Ah well, have an upvote to get you closer to the required amount, best I can do.
Hokuto_Seikun ago
I think the ability to undo an upvote disappears once you hit the limit to stop someone just going and removing one to get around the limit
Edit: apparently it was just a bug
Rocket_McGrain ago
Hello thank you and good luck.
Is there any possibility of having some kind of moderation log publicly viewable and optional for all subvoats or is this a very hard thing to do ?
Other than that I wish you all the best of luck and hope this thing really takes off for you.
Atko ago
Hello and thank you,
That feature is in the backlog and is definitely coming. It isn't really very hard to do but it does take a day or two to implement. I'm not sure about allowing mods to disable it though, because it would beat the purpose. Please feel free to discuss it in /v/ideasforvoat as I'd love to hear what the community thinks. Thank you!
MGSfanboy ago
yeah, don't make it optional, everything out in the open is always the best way to go with this kind of thing.
MrHarryReems ago
We actually were having this discussion in a user's intro thread of all places... The issue with mods being unable to disable it is that it would provide users the ability to see moderated things, like child porn. In the case of my sub, I don't want users to see any destructive criticism of the artists who contribute. It's just rude. However, I think that each subverse should be subject to its own set of rules, however, those rules (such as transparent moderation) should be plainly visible for all. Perhaps transparent moderation should be a requirement that all default subs? I don't know. I'm perfectly happy to have anyone and everyone see when an item was removed and by whom, but not necessarily the contents of the item depending on the context. Maybe different categories for moderation? Like, spam would be visible if a user really wanted to see it, but illegal things or rule violations like child porn would only be visible by other mods or admins?
Rocket_McGrain ago
Thank you very much for your reply, after a difficult day dealing with "mods" this kind of attitude makes me so happy I could honestly kiss you, if that's what your into :P
I figured optional just to be nice, some communities may be happy without it and I didn't want to force them to adopt to my own personal viewpoint just leave the options of where to join up to the people and let them decide for themselves.
I'll hit the ideas bit up if I ever come up with anything that hasn't probably already been suggested twenty times over, I'm probably no the most original guy in the world.
Thank you again for taking the time to reply and putting my mind at ease.

From time to time we publish stats collected by Google Analytics on /v/announcements. Are you looking for anything specific?

I'd buy one too. Just throwing that out there. I don't really like the site's logo, but support free speech enough to make a monetary contribution via t-shirt purchase.
shit, i'd buy stock if it was an IPO type thing, and in my budget.
Ch3ck3rs ago
I would also buy a shirt, but please have feminine cut tees available if y'all do this. They can have the same graphics! Just have the V-neck style that is kinda tapered.
Dick-Tracy ago
If it was tasteful, yes, I sure would. The logo is pretty decent and it hasn't entered the public consciousness yet, so I wouldn't be worried about people calling me a fedora neckbeard for wearing it.
Might be a good way to get some initial funding to help keep the lights on while you figure out how you're gonna pay for all this extra traffic without Selling Out.
Atko ago
Valid points, we'll definitely start looking into it. Also, you made both me and @zook laugh on the fedora thing. Thank you for that :)

Cheers. You guys have a chance to establish a new dynamic for what your site represents and how its users are perceived - hopefully better than Reddit's reputation. It'll be fun to be along for the ride.

Where are you openly discussing functionality?
Looking at the site, some functionality that people like would help improve the site. We understand this can't be done over night.
Features I miss, or might like include:
Ability to hide up and downvoted stories from my view.
Hide button, but maybe make it the space between the up & down vote buttons (e.g. the number), so that way people don't downvote stories just to get them out of their view.
Mobile interface for phone.
RES style functionality to extend VOAT.
Beyond that, thanks for stepping up! If you create a better platform, the people will follow.
Atko ago
We are usually receiving feedback on /v/ideasforvoat or /v/voatdev. Our GitHub repository is also a good place to reach us and discuss functionality.
Mobile interface for phone is already implemented (there is a bug with the login area being out of alignment which @nurdoidz is working on) but it lacks some key features like being able to see sidebars.
As for RES - we're really trying to natively implement everything that RES offers. I hate browser addons with a passion. Call me old fashioned :)
I hope this somewhat answers your question.

Please check out the Github repository and leave your feedback there. It's free and easy to use! :)

From what I've seen, a lot of people here are expressing concerns about "SJW" types. Since this is about "no censorship," can I ask if they are also not going to be censored - a la /v/ShitVoatSays or something? I may not agree with them on a whole lot of things, but I like reddit because I can still get exposed to that sort of stuff. If I had to constantly deal with everyone having the same views I'd go bonkers.
flyawayhigh ago
I am concerned about this "SJW" term. I've been on the internet a long time and I never heard of it until i came here. The term seems to be everywhere suddenly. What is this all about? Who came up with this term? What did these "SJW" people do to whom?
logic_crusader ago
SJWs are an imaginary internet enemy that people won't care about in a couple months. Basically somebody will post some dumb thing an SJW did on the internet, and other people will make fun of it, and then it snowballs until they're considered fascists and enemies to free society.
Foxy ago
I believe the term originally spawned amongst Tumblr social justice communities unironically to refer to more active members of the community. It stands for "Social Justice Warrior." I'm going to try and keep most of this as neutral as possible, because that's more fair than what you'll get from a lot of people.
Social Justice generally refers to furthering the legal and social rights of various minorities, ranging from the support of people like Trayvon Martin to support of gay marriage. Chances are, if you think a group is being unfairly discriminated against somehow, you're for Social Justice.
However, some would argue that communities dedicated specifically to Social Justice are becoming unfavourably extreme, which has lead to the co-opting of the term "SJW" as an insult predominately by Reddit and 4Chan, and can be somewhat linked to a distaste for feminism and feminists on both sites. For example, searching the tag "Otherkin" on Tumblr leads to a rather esoteric community revolving around people who truly believe that they are actually animals, or objects, or fictional/mythological characters, with rather unique pronouns (one famous example being for a plant-kin, who desired the pronouns bud, budself, etc). There are numerous "SJWs" on the site who consider the Otherkin plight to be equally important to that of transgendered individuals. Other examples that people feel are less silly and more serious include the support of Mike Brown in his shooting (an undoubtedly contentious issue), a possibly-satirical "kill all men" vibe and support of Patriarchy theory, sometimes to extreme lengths such as considering the commonly-male practice of spreading one's legs on an empty train row to be an expression of male power to dominate women. The leaning to extremism would obviously be difficult to stop - criticising a point made would draw accusations of racism or sexism, as it is implied (though not necessarily true) that that person is against Social Justice regardless if they are or not.
SJWs tend to be described as middle-upper-class American white girls to be found on Tumblr and /r/ShitRedditSays and its various affiliates, and those considered to be an SJW will commonly describe themselves as feminists. Those that disagree with SJWs are commonly described as MRAs (Men's Rights Activists, as a negative term) by them.
Since SJWs are so popular on Reddit, and it has apparently been exposed that the admins are in league with these people and plan on enforcing a form of censorship to prevent hate speech and subsequent offense, many are migrating here in order to escape and bringing the term "SJW" with them.
Personally, I don't think that SJWs or the insult MRAs exist (though actual Men's Rights Activists do exist). There is no set list of criteria, with it instead being a label given to others who disagree with the label-giver on various political issues. I've been called an SJW several times for disagreeing with Redditors on the issue of guns, for instance, as have many who disagree with the "Reddit hive mind." The term is slightly more valid for describing the political views of communities (with /r/ShitRedditSays being the most popular), however. Whilst I can say that I generally dislike people I've engaged with who consider themselves supporters of the subreddit I just mentioned (it has a very overactive ban policy and so people are often rude and argumentative rather than engaging in an actual debate), but I don't disagree with them on every issue they raise, nor do I agree completely or vilify them as many are prone to do.
Ultimately though, it's up to you to form your own opinion! Just make sure to read widely, and don't just take my word for it or the words of the guy below me or a guy on Reddit or one person on Tumblr. Look at Tumblr, look at Reddit, look here, and decide for yourself!
48062? ago
SJW is short for "Social Justice Warrior." It is a somewhat recent manifestation of "radical" social justice -minded folks.
In my experience, many approach everything looking to be offended. Once they find something to be offended by, they'll go tell their friends with a similar mindset about what offended them. Often, (this is what I mean by they're seeking something to offend them) they will misconstrue arguments and/ or make great assumptions and/ or selectively/misquote a person to get to this offense. On the internet, it is easy to find an echo chamber of sorts, which is especially true on reddit.
The subreddit /r/shitredditsays is one such subreddit. It is full of direct links to "offensive" threads or comments in other subreddits, and in the comment threads of these SRS threads you can witness the echo chamber of misconstrution and hypocritical assumption making.
As I understand the recent flair-up of SJW mentions, it is due to members of that community becoming moderators of other subreddits and moderating based off their personal feelings, not based off what is best for the community.
Orangeandblack ago
I think you just accidentally summarized the political system and how it's possible for politicians and lawmakers to not properly reflect the populace. Neat.
Blight ago
Shit, I gotta be more careful with how I throw about my voats on this place, I don't know if I come across something like this.
Chai_Ito ago
Social Justice Warrior. Broadly speaking, they're individuals/groups who use social media to draw attention to social causes (different SJW people have different causes that they are interested in - gender equality, LGBTQ rights, race relations, etc.). In a perfect world, they would start dialogues and spread relevant information about the issues they are concerned with. But the world isn't perfect.
The SJW types that you're seeing about the problems surrounding reddit/tumblr./voat are the people who take the cause too far. They're known for becoming the "boy who cried wolf" and leveling accusations of social injustice when it's obviously not the case. There are also plenty of instances of SJWs accusing people who disagree with them (for legitimate or illegitimate reasons) of bigotry and being on the wrong side of things, even if the criticism is just against the aggressive tone that SJWs use. They've been known to get the personal information of people (email, phone, address) and recruit fellow 'warriors' to harass and discredit.
I've been fortunate enough to not actually come across any SJW action in my forays around the internet, but I'm sure other people can point you to examples.
The reason the SJW question is so pertinent to voat is the idea that voat is going to be a censorship-free space (barring illegal stuff, of course). That's why there's been an increasing exodus from reddit to voat, and is one of the major differences in how things will be run here. The trick is finding a balance between keeping an open social media experience, and managing swarms of confrontational SJW downvote brigades that will detract the experience of the average user.
flyawayhigh ago
This sounds like a good thing to me. I have long been a serious supporter of both human rights (basic rights for everyone) and civil rights (fair treatment of various populations). I never used the term "social justice" and I am definitely not a "warrior."
Maybe many of the newcomers here have had experience with a particularly hostile group? Could there be shills among that group? It seems fishy to me that those pushing tolerance would typically be so intolerant -- especially since that has not been my experience.
I hope people will not be afraid to discuss these most important issues because some have been uncooperative or hostile.
Chai_Ito ago
It is a good thing! I've got a whole collection of causes that are near and dear to my heart as well, but I suspect (based on the fact that we're having a rational and articulate discussion) that we don't operate the way SJW people do.
To clarify, SJW is a derogatory term that others use to label people who deliberately harass and antagonize people under the guise of 'social justice'... it might be a re-appropriated term, but I'm not positive about that. They pass over beyond being passionate into the territory of sanctimonious, and often hypocritical.
The repeated comments about freedom of speech I've seen in this thread makes me feel good about people being interested in talking about social issues. Ideally, we'll get lucky and voat won't run into these kinds of problems with its users :)
If we're not that lucky, I'm glad the admins are already discussing their plans for how to respond and getting community feedback on it.
flyawayhigh ago
Oh, I can see how this can become very divisive both ways. Hopefully, cooler heads will prevail.
Take the BlackLivesMatter movement for example. It has won the support of many who are not black. And why not? It is a reasonably innocuous cause -- being against trigger happy police who shoot people dead and are almost never held accountable. While black people are far more likely to be victimized by this, white people may also be affected. Any reforms to stop police from shooting black people will benefit every group as they will be across-the-board. This one benefits us all. Maybe after we see reforms here, we will all be in a better position to work together on more difficult issues.
As for Voat running into the typical problems of other services, count on it happening. Fortunately the admins are already discussing it and working on alleviating any damage.

Hey though your laws still apply to you so if the government of your country sees you breaking their laws even on another website you'll still be in trouble. The age of consent in Denmark (I think it was Denmark, and by consent I mean permission to do porn) is 16, but if you watch Danish porn of 16 year olds banging in a country where the age is higher, you're still technically watching CP and will be in trouble.

Interesting. What were the content of the posts, and where did you post them - just describe the general nature if you're worried about getting it deleted from repeating the content.

Shadowbanning is already implemented (we have seen it as a very effective tool against spammers). We will have a weekly list on the site that shows the people that are shadowbanned plus the reason. With this list, it is harder to abuse shadowbanning, but the tool itself can still be used against spammers (they usually do not know the functionality of the site and therefore will not see that list).
Yes, this is a great idea. Until now, we have not received any court order and starting March, we are going to publicly state this every month in order for users to know what is going on.
Combative_Douche ago
What's stopping you from lying about the shadowban reason?
absurdlyobfuscated ago
I most sincerely hope you only ever use shadowbanning to combat spam. Reddit's approach was to passive-aggressively stealth ban people for the slightest of infractions, like voting in linked threads because of "brigading" which at worst should deserve a virtual slap on the wrist and a stern message from an admin. It's a very clumsy tool to deal with intricate, subtle issues, and it's very clearly (in my mind) one of the biggest things reddit does wrong. So I applaud you for doing it in a way that's transparent and leaves very little room for abuse. Seriously, thank you, and this is why I love voat. :)
MeHappy ago
Shadowbanning is a great way to stop spammers - to them it looks as if their spam tool is working, and they don't create a new account. To use the API, Reddit requires an account, so the bot itself cannot detect if it is shadowbanned.
The problem comes in when regular users are shadowbanned. This should never happen. If a ban is to happen, it should be communicated to the user, and a reason given. I hope that Voat admins agree.
Reddit Admins starting abusing the shadowban for whatever reason (I don't completely buy into the whole "sitewide conspiracy" stuff). Also, rules that aren't immediately apparent to users (you aren't allowed to vote on stuff a link you found from another thread, etc) are a huge problem, because new users, and people unfamiliar with the rule get banned without warning.

Do you think that what's going on with Reddit has a chance of happening here?
Atko ago
Not as long as I'm here. I think if a community grows past a certain point, things start to go south. I proposed a system where we would would pause new user registrations for certain periods of time in order to create a manageable buffer. Voat does not have to have hundreds of millions of users. It's that simple. As for power circles dominating voat, I will do everything I can to prevent that. We are discussing this in /v/ideasforvoat and you are welcome to come forward with your ideas. Voat is a user-operated site and users should have their say especially in this early stage of development when key systems are being implemented. I hope this answers your question.
the_federalist ago
I think this is a great idea.

Based. No wonder Hotwheels likes you guys.

I'll post now so I don't forget: Have you been in communication with the Reddit admins at all? They must know of Voat by now - has any ill-well been expressed or do you and the Reddit guys support each other? Also, what are your plans for preventing Act II of the shitshow on Reddit?
zook ago
We have not communicated with the Reddit admins yet. We do not see them as enemies, but believe that we simply have completely different outlooks on how a media aggregator should be managed.
Why Act II will be prevented: https://voat.co/v/announcements/comments/44003/47258 and the maximum of subs one can moderate is set to 10 ;)
astarkey12 ago
The limit of 10 subs is not an effective preventative measure and will only serve to be a minor nuisance. Someone could easily create a new account to control more than 10. I would completely do away with the limit and instead just be more interventionist than the reddit admins when it comes to sub squatters and having strong top mods.
Plus, a lot of people use private subs for CSS sandboxes and other testing spaces. You're needlessly inconveniencing people with this limit.
Teh_Sauce_Guy ago
:(
This makes the VNG impossible to work with because all VNG gamemasters require access to moderate every nation's subverse ;_;
@atko what's your thoughts on this?

Anonymoose ago
..............................so what?
Anonymoose ago
I'll dispense with the pleasantries, but know that this site is necessary and I will continuously support it in my own meager capacity. I have three questions.
Has consideration been made for user-side/mod-side considerate cross-consideration of non-global bans?
What advice can you offer the users in handshaking non-users to join the website?
What are your 3-5 year goals for the website?
Bonus Question: How crazy was the Redexodus for you?
zook ago
Hmm, could you please rewrite/clarify that one?
The best way to spread the word is to do it by telling your friends about us or to share us on Facebook, Twitter, etc. Also, share interesting content that you found on Voat directly on Social media!
3-5 year goals: Take this site as far as it can go! If you think about discussion as an essential tool of human commmunication, the size of reddit f.ex. is quite small compared to FB or YT. We think there is a lot of new things that haven't been tried out yet and we like the role of being pioneers in this :)
Bonus: It is a crazy but also an amazing feeling to see your hours and days of hard work transform into real experiences of users and if the feedback is positive, nothing can be more rewarding!
Anonymoose ago
Thanks for you consideration and answers!
What I meant by my first question was has any consideration been made about the possibility of user oversight over moderator (not administrator) censorship and bans?
aleeum ago

Hi,
First, I'd like to congratulate the Voat team for making a great site with lots of potential. Now to some questions:
Thanks in advance!
Atko ago
Hello and thanks! Voat is far from great but I agree, there is lots of potential if we do the right things and do them right.
I hope this answers your question.
han_shot_first ago
As per funding, doing a gofundme or Kickstarter might not be a bad idea. I'm sure you could get a good bit of cash to keep things going for the time being until a long term source is secured.
Lt_Cmdr_Data ago
Or even just a "Donate" button somewhere on the front page. ATM there's no way to buy "gold" and support the site's development.

I hope there's no gold. Sick and tired of the Edit: Thanks for the gold kind stranger :D
Teh_Sauce_Guy ago

Atko took it down because he said he didn't want to give newcomers the impression that donating was a requirement to use the site.

I think on fullchan, but now I've seen mentions of it all over the place so I don't really remember. However, I didn't realize this used to be called Whoaverse until a few hours ago, which means I originally heard about it last year on Twitter.

from a guy on reddit who got banned
Sacrix ago
I got here somehow after the major redpill post by metaredditcancer, who got banned very quickly after it and then his subreddit got primed for SJW takeover. Voat was mentioned somewhere in either the new /r/subredditcancer or a related subreddit, I don't remember. I subscribed here, and only then did I find out Hotwheels gave his based blessing, so I knew I arrived at the good place.

I saw Hotwheel's tweet, but didn't really come here until I saw it linked on /r/KiA.

The plan is to implement as many features of RES as possible natively for Voat. As our resources are quite limited for the moment, we have to set priorities in order to get the most needed features for the community out there asap.
You can be sure that in the long run, our plans for Voat compromise much more than just a Reddit+RES site. We see this as a project that is never finished and as it is very rewarding to improve the site step by step, we don't see a reason why we should stop doing it ;)

We are not SJW and don't plan on becoming it. Also (luckily for us), no SJW girlfriends ;) We believe in freedom of speech as an inherent value in human communication and will do the utmost to uphold this principle on Voat.

So this is just a conservative/libertarian version of reddit?

So essentially, I can be offensive to anybody, as offensive as I want, as long as no death threats, etc and you guys will not ban me?
I'm not a troll, I just like to have the right to troll if I desire :)
buttreaver ago
What does "SJW" mean to you? On reddit, I see people being accused of being "SJW" just for disagreeing with racists and sexists. Is this website open to people who feel that racism and sexism are problems that don't just affect white men? or are people who are concerned with social equality going to be silenced with downvote brigades in spite of all the "free speech" rhetoric being thrown around?
lawofchaos ago
This is just my personal view on it but I think it's all up to how the individual behaves. If you're here with an agenda to shit on anyone and everyone, people are most likely going to get tired of your shit. If you're here to discuss and share and learn like others and you see something that you think is out of line, I'm sure you're quite welcome to speak up about it. I imagine the votes would also speak for themselves.
Personally I'm so tired of 'SJW' and 'SRS' and whatever other little boxes and categories and groups there are. We are individuals here, not 'men' or 'women' or 'trans' or 'cis' but PEOPLE with individual experiences and beliefs.
I hope that this is a place where we can put our big boy/girl pants on and discuss things peer to peer. I'm sick of people who have none of their own thoughts or ideas acting like everyone should be a part of their little club and making enemies of anyone who isn't.
To me there shouldn't be an 'us vs. them' thing going on but this SRS crowd has forced it upon us. So as far as I'm concerned it has to be about us vs. them and personally I know I'll be downvoting any crybaby, teenage, don't-realise-how-good-I-have-it, first world, mentally unstable internet 'activists' that I see from now on.
Teh_Sauce_Guy ago
This is very important to be answered and seeing it left untouched for a week makes me fairly worried.
TestOne ago
SJW is a term I only hear from gamergaters - a group who think free speech means the right to abuse and threaten people they disagree with in an attempt to silence them, and who fight for journalistic integrity by posting/sharing hate speeches on YouTube.
This kind of unmoderated "censorship free zone" is a honeypot for hateful bigoted viewpoints that are "oppressed" by "nazi censorship" in mainstream websites (just like they're oppressed by common sense and human decency in the real world).

Teh_Sauce_Guy ago
Censorship happens with mass brigading, but banning brigading would in itself be censorship, what can be done about this?
european ago
Good point
Signalerr ago
Well a first good step is to prohibit shadowbans. Shadowbanning is one the key reasons I can no longer stand reddit. If you get banned, you should be informed of it and the offending post should state it to all who can read it. When people start getting banned from the shadows and no one can tell when, why and how they got banned then we have problems.
european ago
Shadowbans were always used.
Teh_Sauce_Guy ago
Yeb. Shadowband should still be kept for spam bots though
Combative_Douche ago

finlandia ago
A great way to do this would be to look how reddit handled such issues and watch where they went wrong. Explore in depth the legal ramifications of doing things our way and to do pretty much whatever errs on the side of free speech.
chakan2 ago
I don't think Reddit did anything wrong...they just don't consistently apply the same rules to all their communities...cough like SRS. cough
tradesbadelynge ago
They didn't really go wrong with the legal aspect of it. They're in USA they follow USA laws. Voat is in switerzerland, so when illegal content is held according to swiss law it's going to get removed.
Blacque ago
The solution that I see for this is that we should create our own nation with our own laws.
HowWasItForYou ago
I don't understand why the leaders of some piece of shit poor developing country don't just upgrade their IT infrastructure, set up laws protecting any online stuff, and start hosting websites that other countries wont allow,
DRUNKPOTUS ago
Most poor countries are plagued by poor policy and the governments are typically funded by natural resource wealth or client networks. Either way=Super poor allocation of the money stuffs.
sciencebitch ago
Probably because if they had enough money to do that they wouldn't be poor in the first place.
Broc_Lia ago
Even dirt poor countries can scrounge enough money together to build airports and things. Besides, they wouldn't have to actually build any of the infrastructure, they'd just have to give foreign multinationals the go-ahead and let them build all the server farms and lay all the fiber optic. It's the same way with tax havens, it's not like they build all the office blocks or anything, they just pass a few laws and let the revenues roll in.
The problem is what would happen to them if they hosted enough stuff america doesn't like.
Broc_Lia ago
How quickly can you say "regime-change"?
If they hosted enough pirated content/ISIS propaganda/whatever the CIA would fund a bunch of rebels and hand the whole thing over to them.
serg ago
This is what I want to know. It's literally the one things that took Reddit down the shitter.
Teh_Sauce_Guy ago
I blame the french!
On a more serious note, this is all the fault of capitalism.
MrHarryReems ago
Actually, I thought it started swirling the drain when all of the Diggers jumped on board. Reasonable discourse turned into name-calling and shouting matches and it was all downhill from there.
Teh_Sauce_Guy ago
And now it's happening to voat. It's beginning to feel toxic. Not by any large amount, but the feeling is now nibbling at me. I can't even fucking go on anything on reddit anymore except a select few subs because of how bad it is.
MrHarryReems ago
I truly hope that doesn't happen here. I created /v/OriginalMusic as a haven from poo-holes. Any name-calling or whatnot will be moderated.
FYI- I recently tried the Black Panther "Burn Baby Burn" revolutionary hot sauce. It's a delicious habanero sauce that's made from all natural organic ingredients. No chemicals or other poo. Definitely my new fave. Thought you might be interested because you're TEH Sauce Guy!

Being owned by Condé Nast contributed nothing to that?
QnA ago
Reddit hasn't been owned by Conde Nast in 4 years. They were spun off into their own entity and answer to only themselves and their shareholders.
tabularassa ago
I can see why Reddit would be lenient towards SJWs and allow them to gain power.
It is in the interest of Reddit to fight the vitriol and become more politically correct, since I suppose they want to be as mainstream and family-friendly as possible, so they can target the largest audience and gain more sponsors, ad revenue, etc.
I guess it's a problem that happens when a site like this gets big, and specially when investors get involved and start calling the shots.
My suggestion to /u/Atko the creator of Voat : Please keep your operation as lean as possible, and keep control of the site as much as you can. You have a nice thing going here.
Sticky ago
asking the important question, also a follow up do you guys plan on having SJW girlfriends?
Chronus ago
Do you guys plan on having girlfriends.
FTFY. I mean with the imminent traffic and activity.
TrollingThunder ago
I'll go ahead and have my question here for you then. If this exodus continues, are you prepared for the traffic and general chaos that will ensue during everyone's settling in period? Also, I've already noticed that there are quite a few differences here at Voat. Is there a page set up that tells new users what to expect and what kinds of new or different features are available?
Atko ago
Hi,
No, we are not fully prepared for a mass exodus. Even though we could handle the traffic, we don't have the staff that we would need in order to manage a huge community. This is why we are looking for investors to back us up (we may do a kickstarter). Unfortunately, there is very little information available for new users. Voat has been developed from scratch and under the hood, it is nothing like reddit. There are temporary limits on voting abilities for new users, realtime notifications, anonymized subs, sets layout and a whole bunch of other features, but all this is not really easy to find and learn about for the time being. I made a post 130 days ago which details some of the differences, but the post is rather dated and we need to rewrite this and update our FAQ page.
