In 1975, he left the country with some of his savings and opened a restaurant in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.[5] Chatwal also entered the hotel business while in Canada, purchasing his first hotel in 1976.[1] In 1979, he opened Bombay Palace, the first fine-dining Indian restaurant in midtown Manhattan.[7] Chatwal expanded Bombay Palace internationally, opening restaurants in London, Hong Kong, and Canada, and eventually becoming a publicly traded company.[8]

He continued to acquire hotels, adding properties in Florida in 1980 and New York in 1982. He later combined all his properties into Hampshire Hotels & Resorts. He suffered from the real estate crisis in the 1990s and was forced to file Chapter 11 bankruptcy. It was then he began to bring in investors as partners and focused on lifestyle branding of hotels, opening properties in New York, Los Angeles, and internationally.[8] By 2006, he was the largest independent owner of hotels in the United States, operating 13 hotels with 3,000 rooms valued at $750 million.[9]

Chatwal is close to former US President Bill Clinton and his family, and has made substantial financial donations to his election campaigns, as well as to other causes and campaigns of the Democratic Party, with many of whose prominent representatives he is on good terms. He has accompanied the Clintons on several journeys to India, and is a Trustee of the William J. Clinton Foundation.[10] In April 2014, he pled guilty to giving illegal campaign contributions to three federal candidates, including Clinton, between 2007 and 2011.[6] He was fined $500,000 and sentenced to probation and community service.[11]

Hampshire Hotels & Resorts rebranded in 2015 to Dream Hotel Group.[12] Chatwal remained as the chairman of the board and a new CEO was appointed to the group[1][13]

Chatwal admitted that he had funneled more than $180,000 in illegal contributions between 2007 and 2011 to three federal candidates, including Clinton, according to media reports. He pleaded guilty in Federal District Court in Brooklyn on Thursday to skirting federal campaign contribution laws and witness tampering.

Chatwal, who has been friendly with the Clintons for years, had raised about $100,000 for Hillary’s 2008 presidential run. However, it turns out, most of that was illegal as it was an elaborate straw donor scheme in which he illegally reimbursed donors for their contributions, the New York Times reported.

Chatwal's father, Sant Chatwal, founded Hampshire Hotels and Resorts, as well as the Bombay Palace restaurant chain, but in 2014 had to resign as CEO due to an arrest by the FBI on illegal campaign contributions to which Sant Chatwal plead guilty in the US District Court, Eastern District of New York getting US$500,000 fine and 1,000 hours community service.[4]

After graduating from Wharton in 1993, he decided to try a career path different than the family business and began working for Morgan Stanley.[7] He worked as an actor and movie producer, landing roles in films such as Zoolander and Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd..[4] He was also a model, becoming the first Sikh model to appear in Vogue Magazine.[7][8] Chatwal decided to join the family business in 1999 and opened the Time Hotel, a luxury hotel located in New York City. This was the first of six independent luxury hotels that he initially operated under his company Vikram Chatwal Hotels.[9]

In 2016, he was arrested again, this time by the NYPD for setting fire to 2 dogs with an aerosol can and lighter. Chatwal was booked on one felony count of criminal mischief—and 3 misdemeanors. He was booked for torturing an animal, reckless endangerment and arson. Vikram Chatwal got 5 days community service.[29]

Chatwal was previously married to Indian model Priya Sachdev with whom he legally separated from in 2011.[20][21] The wedding took place on 18 February 2006 and was spread across ten days in three Indian cities. It was attended by more than 600 people from 26 countries and included notable guests such as steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal,[22] model Naomi Campbell,[22] Patricia Velásquez,[5] rapper P Diddy,[22] Prince Nikolaos of Greece,[5] Bill Clinton,[22] and several Indian celebrities.
