Went hunting again. Tried some different things this time.
First, went hunting in the evening. Here's what it looked like.
As I was getting to my spot I saw this little guy. Never seen one in the wild before!
Today I decided to try just laying in one spot for a long time and scanning. I was quickly accepted by a black ant tribe, who started crawling on my fabric mat and tasting it. I also saw a yellow fuzzy ant, a yellow bellied bird and a pink rump bird. No jackrabbits though! After 45 min or so I did a short walk, trying to flush them out. When I came here before in the morning I'd see 6 or 8 doing it this way. Saw zero!
In fact, the only one I saw was while driving away. Jackass darted into the road then ran along with me for a few moments. Ass.
The extra stuff I carried for setting up a spot was kinda heavy. Not a huge fan.
Oh well! The weather was nice.

Lot of snowshoe hares where i live, but i dont fuck with them. They have enough problems already without me bothering them. Got a trailcam pic of a cougar flying through the air after something, then the next 2 pics were him walking straight toward my camera with a mouth full of bunny.

I see them all over my neighborhood. small though. Cant weigh but a lb or so. I hope you killed that spider
clamhurt_legbeard ago
Aww lol
No, I left him. Tarantulas I have no problem with, plus he was in the wild. I only kill black widows like that....

I call this a successful hunting trip. Cool experience in nature, information gathered. As long as you're paying attention and processing information it's time well spent. That tarantula-looking spider was SO COOL. Tiger's blood level of winning. I'm 100% with the idea of traveling as light as possible. I suspect (I'm not a mammal hunter, so could be very wrong) that your job now is to locate good places to drop a head of lettuce. Later, the pelts will come. You should be sure to carry a good knife while doing so.

Ya I actually had a couple with me, lol...

Was talking to a friend just 3 hours ago who had went squirrel hunting. Said he made 5 shots and had 5 head shot squirrels. He fried them up and he and his family had them with gravy.
Good eating!
clamhurt_legbeard ago
Pffff!
Actually I should check, it might be squirrel season. Haven't tried that yet....
FSHLLtOW ago
Biscuits, gravy, and squirrel. Mmmmmm! Mmmmmm!
clamhurt_legbeard ago
I hope I have better luck with squirrel than I'm having with jackrabbit!
FSHLLtOW ago
Yep. I hope you do to.
I can come home after dark and see 4 or 5 rabbits in my yard, go in and grab a gun and a light and go back out and they are all gone! Dang rabbits! They always know when to disappear.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
im specifically not wanting to use shotgun
otherwise id already have gotten some
but i dont want pellets in my meat or holes in my pelt
FSHLLtOW ago
Yep. I'd rather use a 22. Head shot. Hard to do sometimes though.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
thats my problem lol

I saw tonnes of rabbits all summer long, but since season started I have seen none at all, barely any birds too. I don't actively hunt them but I always have a slingshot with me just in case.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
Isn't it weird?
I'm gonna keep trying and see what happens.

That looks like hog country
clamhurt_legbeard ago
We definitely have hogs, too. I'm starting with easier quarry tho lol
