I pretty much have to agree with that assessment. POTUS has to choose his battles and this one is too big to fight. I sort of arrived there when I went to the grocery one hot sunny day last August. I found a grocery near me that does not require masks; they have an 8½ x 11 paper posted several feet from the door that says only "Masks are recommended by the CDC. Please use safe distancing." Nothing like the other supermarkets with huge posters saying masking is required and listing a bunch or rules and having flow plans taped to the floor. ( I won't shop those.)
But still, more than four out of five were wearing them anyway, even when sweating in the parking lot. And that is when I realized that too many of them are "all in." If/when the truth of the scam comes out, they will not want to accept it. Many will never admit they were scammed. They will cling to the most fragile evidence to justify that they were "doing the right thing" to "err on the side of keeping others safe." (They were erring on the side of surrendering self-rule.)
More recently an appliance repairman came to my house. I asked him to take off his mask, but he refused and said he was more comfortable with it on. I was expecting him to make an excuse like 'company policy,' but no, he said it made him comfortable. The brainwashing is deep.
