The book "Parasite Rex" is where I first learned that they change the host's behavior, in the 3-host parasite cycle: ant, sheep, snail. Only changes the ant's behavior, to walk to the top of a blade of grass and "take in the colors of the sunset" which results in the grass-cropping sheep eating the ant without even noticing it.
Doesn't need to change the sheep's behavior (eggs come out in dung that snail processes) or the snail's (eggs come out in slime trail that the ants process). Also, it's a different shape in each host, reminiscent of the Alien series of movies.
