Basically a way of doing blockchain before blockchain.

Split the data up into multiple pieces, and scatter it across the disks, with redundancy -- so, if any one disk dies, all the data is still there and a blank disk can be added and "worked back in".

The one I liked the best was RAID-5 and its derivatives; you could have multiple "hot spares" and even "cold spares" (i.e., drives you had purchased but hadn't installed yet) -- so that a data center could withstand 20 drives failing all at once, and never lose a byte of data.

The blockchain, well, changes things.

It's good to know how the brakes were invented though! Been watching Little House on the Prairie, and it shows that each and every time Charles parks the wagon. :)
