this is all nonsense. Justice Thomas in no way can become Chief Justice. If roberts resigns, the seat would be a new nominee. Its not chosen from within existing scotus ranks.
It can be anyone the president wants including existing justices. If he appoints a sitting justice to replace a leaving CJ, then he'd also appoint another regular justice at the same time to fill the vacany.

Doesn't POTUS designate the Chief Justice when filling the vacancy? Seems to me that's how Roberts became CJ.
