Saint Malachy in 1139 wrote a prophesy describing all the future, Catholic popes. He described 112 popes, which some people have found coincidental. Personally, for several years I've been aware of the fact that the current pope Francis is the last pope to be named in this prophesy. This is the entirety of what it says about Francis:

"Peter the Roman, who will pasture his sheep in many tribulations, and when these things are finished, the city of seven hills [Rome] will be destroyed, and the dreadful judge will judge his people. The End."

Simply millennialism, the belief carried over from Judaism that every thousand years something big happens which itself comes from Zoroastrianism. 112 popes from 1139 would have been 2000 and so hit the thousand year mark.

Zoroastrianim says the world was started as a 9K year long war of good and evil, the first 3k happen before earth. Then earth is the focus for 6k years and every 2k something big happens and at the end is the apocalypse and good wins. Judaism kept the 6k number and said every 1k years something big would happen. Remember that moses maimonides said zoroastrianism is older than judaism and that Terah, Abraham's father was a zoroastrian. Genesis states that Terah was not a believer in judaism.

So judaism had this strain in it. They held that the every 1k year big things were Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses there would be 2 more and then the big end after 6k years. Christians took this over and said Jesus was the big thing due 1K years after moses and that at 1000 ad the apocalypse end. After nothing they believed in happened 1k years after moses the jews gave up on millennialism. After nothing happened at 1000 ad most christians gave up on this.

Anyway the logical explanation here is that Saint Malachy was holding on to millennialism to the bitter end.

The "Simply millennialism" idea is simply too simple. There is no standard reign of a pope: he is granted a lifetime appointment. It's not as if each pope was granted a ten-year term, which could be summed into a millennium. Life is far stranger than your rationality is willing to concede.
