My opinion is that he is pushing Barr, who Dems have to approve (since they did so unequivocally his last confirmation for AG) and who has a clear friendship with Mueller, so that it completely takes away the argument that Trump is trying to squash the probe. He knows the probe indicts Clinton, he wants to say "Look I brought in a guy who the Dems love and is close w Mueller and even then the Mueller prob shows nothing about me. My guess is that Trump made a deal with Mueller that he'd put one of Mueller's buddies in as AG in exchange for cooperating in a certain way in regards to the probe.
